This verse in the King James

King James wording
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

The verse separates belonging from visibility: you are God’s children now, while the full likeness remains not yet disclosed.

You are already named among God’s children, even while the full shape of what you will be remains unseen. The passage holds that uncertainty beside a promise: when he is manifested, you will be like him and see him as he is. Your present belonging is clear even where your future form is not.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

You are not waiting for visible perfection to qualify as one of God’s children. The passage names your belonging as present and your fullest likeness as not yet disclosed.

ἐφανερώθη

ephanerōthē

GROWS FROM

φαίνω

phainō

To shine, appear, or bring into view; this word family describes what becomes visible or manifest.

Both “appear” clauses use forms of ⁨φανερόω⁩ (phaneroō), meaning “make visible” or “manifest.” The verse places what is hidden and what is revealed on one line: the not-yet is about disclosure, while the belonging it names is already present.

ALSO GROWS

phaneroō: Make manifest, disclose, bring into view.

φανερόω

This is the verb behind both appearances in the verse, linking what is not yet visible with the moment of its unveiling.

phaneros: Visible, manifest, plain to see.

φανερός

It names the state of being in view, illuminating the movement from hidden likeness to disclosed likeness.

Present belonging can be certain while its full likeness remains hidden, until unveiling makes it visible.

As for me, I gaze upon your face in alignment; I am filled when I wake with your form.
Psalm 17:15 · SDVThe speaker’s satisfaction comes when awakening brings God’s likeness into view, echoing the movement from hiddenness to seeing.
For the creation waits with its head stretched forward, watching for the unveiling of the sons of God.
Romans 8:19 · SDVCreation’s expectation turns toward the manifestation of God’s children, echoing the movement from what is not yet visible to disclosure.
For now we see through a mirror, in a riddle; but then face to face. Now I know in pieces; but then I shall know wholly, even as I was known.
1 Corinthians 13:12 · SDVPartial sight and knowledge give way to face-to-face perception, echoing the promise of seeing without obscurity.
When the Anointed One, our life, is made visible, then you also will be made visible with him in weight.
Colossians 3:4 · SDV

Colossians uses the same Greek verb ⁨φανερόω⁩ (phaneroō), meaning “to be manifested,” for Christ’s appearing and yours with him. It opens this promise outward: when Christ is disclosed, the life shared with him is disclosed too.
