King James wording
King James Version
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.THE KEY
When love reaches its full measure, fear is driven out of the place it once held.
THE MEANING
As love reaches its full expression in you, fear loses its hold. The fear in view carries the threat of punishment with it. When fear still rules, love has not yet reached its goal in you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This overturns the belief that being loved requires staying afraid of punishment: the verse says fear belongs to love that has not yet reached completion.
THE ROOT
τελεία
teleia
GROWS FROM
τελ-
tel-
End, goal, completion.
The word translated “perfect” can describe what has reached its full measure or goal. Love here is arriving at completion, and the verse links that completion with fear being expelled.
ALSO GROWS
telos: end, goal, outcome
τέλος
It gives “perfect” the sense of love arriving at its intended end.
teleioō: bring to completion, fulfill
τελειόω
This related verb makes the process clear: love is brought to its full measure.
ἐκβάλλει
ekballei
GROWS FROM
βαλλ-
ball-
Throw, cast.
“throws out fear” in this verse is ekballei. The verb joins ἐκ (ek, out) with βάλλω (ballō, throw). Love’s completion acts decisively: it throws fear out rather than merely quieting it.
ALSO GROWS
ballō: throw, cast
βάλλω
This is the core action inside the verb translated “casteth out.”
ekbolē: expulsion, throwing out
ἐκβολή
This related noun carries the same image of something being cast out.
THE PATTERN
As love reaches completion, fear loses the power to hold a person under dread or bondage.
I seek the LORD, and he answers me, and snatches me out of every place of dread. And loosen those who through fear of death were held in slavery throughout all their living. For God has not given us a breath of cowering, but a breath of power, and of love, and of a mind kept whole.THE THREAD
And loosen those who through fear of death were held in slavery throughout all their living. Both verses use φόβος (phobos, fear). Hebrews shows fear’s grip as bondage across a lifetime; 1 John shows what love at its full measure does to that same fear: it casts it out.
