King James wording
King James Version
Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.THE KEY
The Hebrew says “fill your words”: confirmation is another voice bringing what has been spoken to fullness.
THE MEANING
Your words can be true before they are fully heard. Another voice can join them and give them full public weight, without replacing the first speaker. Confirmation is speech joined to speech until what was said stands.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that needing another voice makes your words weak or unreal. The second voice strengthens what is already spoken; it does not erase it.
THE ROOT
וּמִלֵּאתִי
ūmilleʾtî
GROWS FROM
מלא
m-l-ʾ
To fill, make full, or complete.
“fill your words” in this verse is ūmilleʾtî. The Hebrew verb here is built on מלא (male, to fill): the KJV’s “confirm” carries an image of filling out what has been spoken. Another voice gives the words full standing without replacing the first speaker.
ALSO GROWS
male: To be full or filled.
מָלֵא
This is the state behind the confirmation: the spoken words reach fullness through the added voice.
melo: Fullness; all that fills a space.
מְלֹא
This branch gives the verb a sense of complete measure: the confirming voice fills out the words’ force.
דְּבָרָיִךְ
devarayikh davar
GROWS FROM
דבר
d-b-r
To speak; speech as word or matter.
דָּבָר (davar, word) can also mean a matter or affair, joining what is said to what is at stake. The words here are not detached sounds: they are a spoken matter another voice helps bring to full standing.
ALSO GROWS
davar: A word, matter, affair, or thing.
דָּבָר
The verse holds speech and the matter being spoken about together; confirmation gives both public standing.
dibber: He spoke or uttered.
דִּבֵּר
This branch keeps the focus on words as spoken acts, now joined by another speaker.
THE PATTERN
Words gain public firmness when another witness stands beside them.
One witness shall not rise up against a man for any crookedness, or for any falling short, in it he misses the mark; upon the mouth of two witnesses, or upon the mouth of three witnesses, the word shall stand.Without counsel, plans are broken, but in a multitude of counselors they stand. This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word stand.THE THREAD
And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Bear fruit and multiply, and fill the earth, and tread it under your foot, and rule over the fish of the sea, and over the winged of the heavens, and over every living thing that creeps upon the earth."The Hebrew root מלא (male, to fill or make full) also appears in “replenish the earth.” Genesis fills the earth with life; here, another voice fills out words, giving them their full measure.
