This verse in the King James

King James wording
And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.

The Hebrew verb for inheriting can also mean dispossessing, so Ahab’s possession comes through Naboth’s removal.

Ahab hears that Naboth is dead, rises, and goes to claim the vineyard. The movement lays bare how another person’s death can become a path to possession.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that a claim becomes just once its owner is gone; Naboth’s death does not cleanse the taking.

לְרִשְׁתּוֹ

lərištō

GROWS FROM

ירשׁ

y-r-sh

To take possession or inherit; in a causative form, to dispossess.

“take hold of” in this verse is lərištō. This root can describe both receiving an inheritance and driving someone out of what is theirs. Here Ahab’s claim follows Naboth’s death, making dispossession the path to possession.

ALSO GROWS

yerushah: Possession or inheritance

יְרֻשָּׁה

It shows that the root can describe what passes into someone’s hands as an inheritance.

morashah: Heritage or inherited possession

מוֹרָשָׁה

Naboth’s vineyard is not merely land to Ahab; it is tied to what Naboth holds as an inheritance.

horish: To dispossess or drive out

הוֹרִישׁ

This causative branch reveals the other side of possession: someone may gain land by removing its holder.

Power turns another person’s removal into a route to possession.

They covet fields and tear them away, and houses, and carry them off. So they press a man and his house, even a man and his inheritance.
Micah 2:2 · SDVLike Ahab, these powerful people turn desire for land into the seizure of another person’s home and inheritance.
But those who work the soil said among themselves, This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the portion will be ours.
Mark 12:7 · SDVThe husbandmen state the same mechanism openly: killing the heir becomes their imagined route to the inheritance.
You have judged against the aligned one and struck him down, and he does not set himself against you.
James 5:6 · SDVHere too, the powerful use another’s destruction to secure their position.
See, I have set the land before you. Go in and take hold of the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give to them and to their seed after them.
Deuteronomy 1:8 · SDV

The Hebrew word translated “possess” comes from the same root as Ahab’s “take possession.” The root can describe possession received under a promise or possession seized from its holder; Naboth’s death exposes the difference between those two paths.
