This verse in the King James

King James wording
Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in my statutes, and execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father:

As the house rises, God’s word is made to stand with the builder whose life walks within his instruction.

The house before you is joined to the way you live: you walk in God’s instruction, enact its judgments, and guard its commands. As you walk within them, God establishes the word spoken with you.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that building a sacred work is enough to secure the promise: the promise is joined to the builder’s lived walk in God’s instruction.

וַהֲקִמֹתִי

va-haqimoti

GROWS FROM

קום

qum

To rise or stand; in this form, to cause to stand, establish.

“make stand” in this verse is va-haqimoti. The Hebrew form translated perform carries the image of making something stand. The promise is not merely spoken beside the house under construction; God’s word is established with the builder.

ALSO GROWS

qam: Rose, stood

קָם

The root’s basic image is something rising into a standing position, giving the promise the sense of becoming firm.

heqim: Established, made to stand

הֵקִים

This causative form shows how the root describes bringing something into a firm standing, as God does with the word spoken to Solomon.

תֵּלֵךְ

telekh

GROWS FROM

הלך

halakh

To go, walk, or move along a way.

The verse says walk at the start and repeats the same root in to walk in them. That repetition makes the commandments a path for ongoing movement: the builder is shaped by a way of life, not a single act.

ALSO GROWS

lalekhet: To walk

לָלֶכֶת

This infinitive repeats the root near the end of the verse, placing the commandments themselves as the way the builder walks.

hithallekh: Walk about, conduct oneself

הִתְהַלֵּךְ

The same root can describe a person’s manner of moving through life, opening the verse’s walk into a whole lived way.

וְשָׁמַרְתָּ

ve-shamarta

GROWS FROM

שמר

shamar

To watch, guard, or keep.

“guard” in this verse is ve-shamarta. Keep carries the image of guarding attentively; the same root names both a watchman and a guarded charge. Here the builder’s walk includes sustained attention to the commands that guide it.

ALSO GROWS

shomer: One who watches or guards

שֹׁמֵר

The watchman’s role reveals the alert care carried by keeping the commandments.

mishmeret: Guard duty, charge

מִשְׁמֶרֶת

This branch can name something entrusted to someone’s care, adding the sense of holding the commands faithfully in view.

God establishes his promise alongside a life that guards his instruction and walks in it.

The LORD shall raise you up as a set-apart people for himself, as he has sworn to you, if you guard the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in his ways.
Deuteronomy 28:9 · SDVThe LORD’s establishing of a people is joined to keeping the commandments and walking in his ways.
Jesus answered and said to him, If anyone loves me, that one will guard my word, and my Father will love that one, and we will come to him and make a place to remain with him.
John 14:23 · SDVKeeping Jesus’ words becomes the setting in which God makes his abode with the person.
But whoever guards his word, in that one, in truth, the love of God has been made complete. By this we perceive that we are in him.
1 John 2:5 · SDVGod’s love reaches its fullness in the one who keeps the word.
That the LORD may make his word stand, which he spoke concerning me, saying, If your children guard their way, to walk before my face in truth with all their heart and with all their living soul, a man shall never be cut off for you from the throne of Israel.
1 Kings 2:4 · SDV

Continue here comes from the same root, ⁨קום⁩ (qum), as perform: to make stand, establish. David’s words to Solomon bind that standing promise to a way of walking, echoing the condition spoken while Solomon builds the house.
