This verse in the King James

King James wording
And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

The verb behind “answered” means “return”: after David repeats his words to another person, the people return the same kind of answer.

A question passes from one person to another, and the answer comes back in the familiar form. The exchange keeps moving, yet its words remain the same.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A repeated answer does not, by itself, mean that the underlying situation has changed.

וַיְשִׁבֵהוּ

vayeshivehu

GROWS FROM

שׁוּב

shuv

To return or turn back; in this causative form, to answer by returning a response.

“returned the word as before” in this verse is vayeshivehu. English makes “answered” sound like a separate act of speech. The Hebrew verb carries the sense of something coming back: a response is a return. That same root can describe restoration, so return can become a way back to wholeness.

ALSO GROWS

hēshîv: To answer or return something.

הֵשִׁיב

It makes the reply in this verse part of a returning movement: speech goes out, then an answer comes back.

yeshovev: To restore or turn back.

יְשׁוֹבֵב

The same root appears in Psalm 23:3, where what returns is restored.

דָּבָר

davar

GROWS FROM

דבר

d-b-r

To speak; the related noun means a word, matter, or thing.

“manner / word” in this verse is davar. The word translated “manner” is davar, the same word that can mean “word” or “matter.” The verse repeats davar in its description of both David’s speech and the people’s response, so English “manner” partly conceals how explicitly the utterance itself recurs.

ALSO GROWS

dibber: To speak.

דִּבֵּר

It names the spoken act that begins the repeated exchange.

davar: A word, matter, or thing.

דָּבָר

The crowd answers with a davar like the first davar: the same word or matter returns in the reply.

The same words can circulate across speakers, carrying an unchanged pattern from one exchange into the next.

And as he spoke with them, behold, the man of the between came up, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words; and David heard them.
1 Samuel 17:23 · SDVGoliath’s repeated words carry the same challenge into another moment, where David hears them.
And as for the dream being doubled to the Great House twice, it is because the word is set firm by God, and God will hasten to do it.
Genesis 41:32 · SDVThe repeated dream keeps the same matter before Pharaoh and marks it as established.
Again he went away and prayed, speaking the same word.
Mark 14:39 · SDVThe prayer returns in the same words, showing speech recur in the same form.
He turns back my living soul; he leads me in the tracks of alignment for the sake of his nature.
Psalm 23:3 · SDV

“Restoreth” uses ⁨יְשׁוֹבֵב⁩ (yeshovev, “restore/turn back”), from the same root ⁨שׁוּב⁩ (shuv, “return”) as “answered” here. In this verse a response returns to the exchange; in the psalm, return becomes restoration.
