King James wording
King James Version
Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.THE KEY
The verse places fear in the observer’s response to visible wisdom, not in the wisdom itself.
THE MEANING
When you see another person’s clear, effective conduct, recognition and fear can arise together. Here, Saul’s fear appears as David’s wisdom comes into view; that fear alone does not show that David’s conduct is dangerous.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Fear does not by itself prove that the person feared is dangerous; here it rises in response to David’s wise conduct.
THE ROOT
מַשְׂכִּיל
maśkîl
GROWS FROM
שׂכל
sakal
To have insight or act prudently, with the sense extending to success through understanding.
“acted with great insight” in this verse is maśkîl. The same root connects insight with intelligent action and success. Saul sees not just a clever thought, but perceptive conduct made effective and visible, and that sight awakens his fear.
ALSO GROWS
sekel: Understanding, insight, or discretion.
שֵׂכֶל
This branch shows that David’s wise conduct carries discernment within it; Saul sees understanding expressed in action.
hiskil: To act prudently or succeed.
הִשְׂכִּיל
This verb form joins wise judgment to effective action, revealing why David’s conduct is so noticeable to Saul.
THE PATTERN
Wisdom becomes visible through effective conduct, and observers recognize it by what a person does.
And David acted with insight along all his ways, and the LORD was with him.And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did break through in his hand.Who among you is wise and knowing? Let him show his works from a good walk, in the tamed gentleness of wisdom.THE THREAD
And David acted with insight along all his ways, and the LORD was with him.Verse 14 uses the same root for David’s wise conduct that appears here. Verse 15 shows Saul seeing what verse 14 names: wisdom expressed in David’s ways.
