King James wording
King James Version
When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;)THE KEY
The one named beloved becomes known while the one named asked-for sits armed.
THE MEANING
When the one you regard as a threat becomes known, power can arrange itself around a weapon: one hand grips, others stand. Saul’s spear is already in hand, and the servants ring him; the scene holds its violence before the strike. The verse speaks to the instant when exposure turns into armed watchfulness.
THE ROOT
דָּוִד
Dawid
GROWS FROM
דוד
d-w-d
Beloved, dear one.
David’s name carries “beloved” through the family of דוד. What comes into view is the beloved, while Saul’s response appears as a spear already in hand; the name and the threat occupy the same frame.
ALSO GROWS
dod: Beloved, dear one.
דּוֹד
The name’s root gives David’s presence a quality English leaves unspoken.
dodi: My beloved.
דּוֹדִי
This form from the same root makes the name’s meaning intimate: the one becoming known is the beloved.
שָׁאוּל
Sha’ul
GROWS FROM
שאל
sh-ʾ-l
Ask, request; Sha’ul carries the sense “the one asked for.”
“Saul” in this verse is Sha’ul. The name of the ruler asked for sits over a posture of armed containment, while the name of the one made known carries “beloved.” The names hold a tension that the English verse does not spell out.
ALSO GROWS
sha’al: To ask or request.
שָׁאַל
This verb carries the root sense within Saul’s name.
she’elah: A request or question.
שְׁאֵלָה
This noun from the same root keeps the idea of asking present in the name.
נוֹדַע
noda‘
GROWS FROM
ידע
y-d-ʿ
Know, recognize, perceive; in this form, become known.
“had become known” in this verse is noda‘. נוֹדַע is a form of ידע: David has become known. English “discovered” can sound like a search ending; the Hebrew form also holds David’s arrival into shared knowledge.
ALSO GROWS
yāda‘: To know or perceive.
יָדַע
This is the root verb beneath “was discovered.”
da‘at: Knowledge or understanding.
דַּעַת
This related form shows the movement from becoming known to knowledge itself.
THE PATTERN
Power under threat gathers around itself and directs force against the one whose presence unsettles it.
The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers sit down together against the LORD and against his anointed one, saying,Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "Thus let the gods do to me, and add more, if I do not set your living soul as the living soul of one of them by this time tomorrow."Then Herod, when he perceived that he had been mocked by the wise men, burned with rage, and sent forth and killed all the children who were in Bethlehem and in all its borders, from two years old and under, according to the time he had carefully learned from the wise men.THE THREAD
And Saul saw and perceived that the LORD was with David, and that Michal, Saul's daughter, loved him.The same root, ידע, appears in “was discovered” here and “knew” there. Saul’s knowledge that the LORD is with David makes the report that David is known more than a location update: recognition itself is part of the pressure around the spear.
