King James wording
King James Version
And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all.THE KEY
Recovery here is a turning: what was taken comes back, until nothing is missing.
THE MEANING
Loss can feel like the whole account, but this verse holds open a different ending: no one is missing, from small to great, and the children and spoil are all there. Its final word, “all,” makes complete return visible rather than vague.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that what has been taken is gone for good meets a complete return here: nothing is left outside the count.
THE ROOT
הֵשִׁיב
hēshîv
GROWS FROM
שׁוּב
שׁוּב (shuv) means to turn back or return.
“brought back all” in this verse is hēshîv. Under “recovered” is the motion of return: David brings back what had been taken. The root holds turning back and restoration together, so wholeness here is the missing brought back.
ALSO GROWS
shuv: to turn or return
שׁוּב
The base verb names the return-motion at the center of recovery.
hēshîv: to cause to return; to restore
הֵשִׁיב
This is the form used here: David brings what was taken back.
teshuvah: return; turning back
תְּשׁוּבָה
This noun carries the same root’s movement of turning back into the idea of return.
THE PATTERN
Restoration is a return that gathers what loss has separated back into wholeness.
He turns back my living soul; he leads me in the tracks of alignment for the sake of his nature. And I will make whole for you the years that the locust has eaten, the lapper, the gnawer, and the shearer, my great army which I sent among you.For this son of mine was dead, and is living again; he had lost his way, and is found." And they began to be glad.THE THREAD
He turns back my living soul; he leads me in the tracks of alignment for the sake of his nature. The verb behind “restoreth” is יְשׁוֹבֵב (yeshovev, restores or turns back), from the same root שׁוּב (shuv, turn or return) as “recovered” here. The shared root lets both verses show restoration as a return toward wholeness.
