This verse in the King James

King James wording
So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.

The good news is shared not only in words but through the living selves of the ones who bear it.

You are met by a longing that offers more than words: the speakers share their own living selves with you. Here, “souls” names whole living persons, not a hidden part detached from life. The reason is plain: you are dear.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The good news is only a message to receive, while the people who carry it remain separate.

ψυχάς

psychas

GROWS FROM

ψυχ-

psych-

Living soul; the living self, and by extension one’s life.

“living souls” in this verse is psychas. “Our own souls” names the whole living selves being shared, not an abstract inner part. The same Greek word can also mean a person’s life, so the gift reaches beyond the message to the people giving it.

ALSO GROWS

psychē: Living soul; life or self.

ψυχή

The verse uses the plural form of this word, naming the whole selves shared with the readers.

psychikos: Natural; belonging to the soul-life.

ψυχικός

The same stem appears in “natural body” in 1 Corinthians 15:44, tying this word-family to lived existence rather than a detached inner fragment.

εὐαγγέλιον

euangelion

GROWS FROM

ἀγγελ-

angel-

A message or announcement carried by a messenger; ⁨εὖ⁩ (eu) adds the sense of good.

“good news of God” in this verse is euangelion. English makes “gospel” and “messenger” sound unrelated, but their Greek forms belong to the same word-family. Here, the good message is named beside the sharing of the speakers’ own living selves.

ALSO GROWS

euangelizō: Bring or announce good news.

εὐαγγελίζω

The message-word also names the act of announcing it, linking the content with the person who carries it.

angelos: Messenger.

ἄγγελος

The messenger and the good message share a word-family, which illuminates the verse’s joining of the message with the people who share it.

Love gives the message together with a share in the giver’s own living self.

And if you pour out your living soul to the hungry, and fill the bowed-low living soul, then your light shall rise in the darkness, and your gloom shall be as the noonday.
Isaiah 58:10 · SDVThe hungry are met as a person draws out their own soul, so care takes the form of a life shared.
No one has greater love than this, that someone lay down his living soul for his friends.
John 15:13 · SDVLove reaches its fullest edge when a person gives their life for friends.
And I will gladly spend, and be spent out entirely, for your living souls. If I overflow in loving you, am I loved less?
2 Corinthians 12:15 · SDVThe speaker’s own giving of self is bound directly to love for the people addressed.
No one has greater love than this, that someone lay down his living soul for his friends.
John 15:13 · SDV

The Greek noun ⁨ψυχή⁩ (psychē, living soul) appears in both verses, rendered “souls” here and “life” there. That shared word gathers the self and one’s life together: what is shared is the living person, not merely a message.
