This verse in the King James

King James wording
Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.

The princes’ bodies bow, and the king’s ear bends toward them: influence enters through what he hears and answers.

When one voice is no longer present, other voices can gain the ear. The princes bow before the king, and he hears and answers them; the direction of power turns through the voices he receives.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Being heard by authority does not prove a counsel is true; a posture of deference can win access without making its message wise.

שָׁמַע

shāmaʿ

GROWS FROM

שמע

sh-m-ʿ

To hear, listen, and respond.

“heard them and responded to them” in this verse is shāmaʿ. Here, hearkening is hearing that answers: the king does not merely receive sound; he responds to the princes’ voices. The root makes the hinge visible, the direction of the realm begins to shift through the king’s responsive ear.

ALSO GROWS

shemaʿ: Hear and respond.

שְׁמַע

This branch carries the root’s fuller sense: hearing includes a response, as the king’s hearkening does here.

shemuʿah: A report or news heard and received.

שְׁמוּעָה

The same root can name a message that arrives by hearing, linking the king’s response to the counsel brought before him.

The direction of a person or people follows the counsel their hearing receives and answers.

A wise one hears and responds, and adds to what is taken in; a discerning one grasps the cords that steer.
Proverbs 1:5 · SDVWisdom grows when hearing opens into response, making this a constructive counterpart to the king’s vulnerable attention.
But he let go of the counsel of the elders, which they had given him, and took counsel with the youths who had grown up with him, who stood before him.
1 Kings 12:8 · SDVWhen a ruler turns from one counsel to another, the people’s direction changes with the voices he chooses to receive.
And he said to them, Watch what you hear. By whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you, and more will be added to you who hear.
Mark 4:24 · SDVHearing is consequential: what is received sets the measure of what can be received next.
And Samuel said, Does the LORD delight in rising offerings and slaughtered offerings as much as in hearing and responding to the voice of the LORD? Behold, hearing and responding is better than a slaughtered offering; to prick the ear is better than the fat of rams.
1 Samuel 15:22 · SDV

This verse uses ⁨שׁמע⁩ (shamaʿ, hear and respond) to connect hearing the LORD’s voice with answering it. Beside the king’s response to the princes, it makes the question of whose voice receives that response impossible to miss.
