This verse in the King James

King James wording
To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.

The land’s desolation is not empty time; it is the sabbath it was owed finally coming due.

The land has a claim to rest that human use cannot erase. When that limit is denied, cessation can arrive as desolation; here, the word reaches its full measure through that loss.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that rest can be withheld indefinitely without consequence: the land’s sabbath still comes, though here it comes through desolation.

שַׁבְּתוֹתֶיהָ

shabbetoteha

GROWS FROM

שבת

sh-b-t

To cease, stop, or rest.

English gives you both “her sabbaths” and “she kept sabbath,” but Hebrew repeats the same root for what the land receives and what it does. The land is not simply empty: its cessation is described as sabbath-keeping, while desolation becomes the condition in which that rest is finally received.

ALSO GROWS

shavat: To cease, stop, or rest.

שָׁבַת

The verse uses this verb too in “she kept sabbath,” so the land’s sabbaths and its ceasing name one action.

shabbaton: A marked or solemn sabbath-rest.

שַׁבָּתוֹן

This branch shows the root extending to a set-apart cessation, a stopping built into time.

לְמַלֹּאות

lemallot

GROWS FROM

מלא

m-l-ʾ

To fill, make full, or complete.

“fill” in this verse is lemallot. The same verb fills both “the word of the LORD” and “seventy years”; prophecy and duration share one measure. Fulfillment here is pictured as reaching fullness across time, not only as a prediction being confirmed.

ALSO GROWS

male: Full; to be full.

מָלֵא

The verbal family gives “fulfil” its sense of bringing something to fullness.

melo: Fullness or the full extent of something.

מְלוֹא

This related form echoes the verse’s picture of both a spoken word and a span of years reaching their full measure.

Rest belongs inside the order of life; when it is continually deferred, cessation does not disappear.

And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had made, and he stopped on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
Genesis 2:2 · SDVThe pattern begins with work reaching its completion through rest.
But in the seventh year there shall be a full stopping for the land, a stopping for the LORD. You shall not sow your field, nor prune your vineyard.
Leviticus 25:4 · SDVThe land itself receives a built-in sabbath from cultivation.
He said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.
Mark 2:27 · SDVSabbath is presented as serving life, with rest held within the order of things.
As long as she lies emptied, she shall rest, because she did not rest in your sabbaths, when you settled upon her.
Leviticus 26:35 · SDV

Leviticus states the mechanism this verse compresses: while the land lies desolate, it rests because it did not rest during habitation. The shared ⁨שבת⁩ root makes “sabbaths” and “rest” one action, so desolation becomes the land’s deferred cessation finally taking place.
