This verse in the King James

King James wording
If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people;

What looks like three calamities is one chain of interruption: rain is withheld, the land is consumed, and pestilence enters the people.

The verse puts the whole chain of life before you: heaven can be restrained, the land consumed, and pestilence sent among the people. Rain, food, and bodily safety appear as one vulnerable field under a single agency.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that drought, harvest loss, and disease are isolated kinds of suffering; the verse binds them as linked forms of devastation.

אֶשְׁלַח

ʾešlaḥ

GROWS FROM

שלח

š-l-ḥ

Send, dispatch, send forth.

“send” in this verse is ʾešlaḥ. The pestilence is named as something sent into the midst of the people. The same root forms ⁨שָׁלִיחַ⁩ (shaliach, messenger, one sent) and ⁨שִׁלֹחַ⁩ (Shiloach, sent), linking both to movement from a sender into another’s space; here that movement is destructive.

ALSO GROWS

shaliach: Messenger; one sent.

שָׁלִיחַ

A messenger is dispatched from a sender, just as pestilence is explicitly sent among the people here.

Shiloach: Sent; the name of a pool.

שִׁלֹחַ

The name preserves the root’s sense of something sent forth, while this verse uses that same movement for devastation.

לֶאֱכֹל

leʾĕkhol

GROWS FROM

אכל

ʾ-k-l

Eat, consume.

“devour” in this verse is leʾĕkhol. The Hebrew uses the ordinary verb “eat” for what the locusts do. The land’s yield becomes their food: nourishment turns into the mechanism of devastation.

ALSO GROWS

okhel: Eating; one who eats.

אֹכֵל

The locusts are pictured as eaters, making the crop loss a direct act of consumption.

ma'akal: Food; something eaten.

מַאֲכָל

What grows from the land becomes food for the locusts, exposing the harvest’s vulnerability.

אֶעְצֹר

ʾeʿṣōr

GROWS FROM

עצר

ʿ-ṣ-r

Restrain, hold back, confine.

“hold the heavens shut” in this verse is ʾeʿṣōr. The verb carries the sense of restraint as well as closure. The heavens are held back from giving rain, the first interruption in the sequence.

ALSO GROWS

atsur: Restrained; confined.

עָצוּר

It shares the image of something held back, like rain from a closed heaven.

ma'atsar: Confinement; detention.

מַעְצָר

This branch makes the root’s force of restraint concrete: what is confined cannot move freely.

Under judgment, rain, the harvest, and bodily survival are treated as parts of one vulnerable whole.

The LORD shall give the rain of your land as powder and dust. From the heavens it shall come down upon you, until you are destroyed.
Deuteronomy 28:24 · SDVRain itself becomes an instrument of devastation, joining what comes from heaven to the fate of the land.
I sent plague among you in the way of Egypt. I killed your young men with the sword, and carried off your horses. I made the stench of your camps rise into your nostrils. Yet you have not turned back to me, says the LORD.
Amos 4:10 · SDVPestilence and death among the people enter the same account of devastation.
The first messenger sounds, and there comes hail and fire mixed with blood, and they are thrown upon the earth; and the third part of the trees is burned down, and all green grass is burned down.
Revelation 8:7 · SDVThe judgment reaches the living land itself, extending the pattern of devastation beyond human bodies.
If my people, upon whom my name is called, bend themselves low, and pray, and seek my face, and turn back from their harmful ways, then I will hear from the heavens, and I will release their falling short, and heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14 · SDV

The Hebrew repeats ⁨אֶרֶץ⁩ (ʾereṣ, land): the ground exposed to the locusts in 7:13 is the ground named for healing in 7:14. The next verse pairs hearing from heaven with release and healing of the land, reversing the devastation named here.
