This verse in the King James

King James wording
In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me:

The word for a city held under guard also describes peace guarding the heart, so a guard’s purpose, not the fact of guarding, decides whether it protects or captures.

Power can place a whole city under watch to seize one person. Here the threat is organized and explicit: the guard’s purpose is capture. Being watched or guarded does not by itself mean being protected; the purpose of the keeping determines its character.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The assumption that being watched or guarded always means being kept safe.

“guarded the city” in this verse is ephrourei from. The city is guarded with the specific aim of seizing one person. The same verb later pictures peace guarding hearts and minds (Philippians 4:7), so “keeping” can mean either containment or protection; the guard’s purpose makes the difference.

phrouros: guard; sentinel

φρουρός

This related word names the watchman behind the action: the city is actively watched as part of a pursuit.

This related word can name both a guard force and being held in custody, bringing the verse’s overlap of guarding and capture into view.

Being enclosed or guarded takes its meaning from its purpose: it can serve capture or protection.

And it was told Saul that David had come to Keilah. And Saul said, God has given him into my hand; for he is shut up by coming into a town with doors and bolts.
1 Samuel 23:7 · SDVA walled town becomes a means of trapping the person its ruler wants to seize.
But their lying in wait was known to Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.
Acts 9:24 · SDVThe watched gates make the city’s boundary part of a deliberate attempt to capture and kill.
And the wholeness of God, which overhangs all understanding, will garrison your hearts and perceptions in Jesus the Anointed One.
Philippians 4:7 · SDVThe same Greek verb for guarding is used for hearts and minds held in protection by peace.
And the wholeness of God, which overhangs all understanding, will garrison your hearts and perceptions in Jesus the Anointed One.
Philippians 4:7 · SDV

This verse uses the same Greek word ⁨φρουρέω⁩ (phroureō, to guard or keep under watch) as “kept” here. In Damascus, a ruler’s guard surrounds a city to seize someone; in Philippians, peace guards heart and mind, revealing how the same act of keeping can serve capture or protection.
