This verse in the King James

King James wording
For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause.

The mind that seems to stand outside its usual place and the mind that is sound can both serve beyond themselves, toward God and toward you.

Your inward state does not by itself determine what it serves: what seems like a departure from composure can be Godward, while a sound mind can be turned toward another person. The verse holds both possibilities together without making either cancel the other.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that only composed, socially legible behavior can be directed toward God.

ἐξέστημεν

exestēmen

GROWS FROM

ἵστημι

histēmi

to stand or be set in place

The verb behind “beside ourselves” is built on the image of standing outside or being displaced from one’s usual place. English can make it sound only like a verdict of madness; the Greek keeps a spatial image of being outside oneself.

ALSO GROWS

existēmi: to stand out, be displaced, or be beside oneself

ἐξίστημι

This is the verb used in the verse, carrying the image of standing outside one’s usual place.

anastasis: a standing up again; resurrection

ἀνάστασις

It shares the “standing” root and shows how Greek can express a changed state through a shift in position.

σωφρονοῦμεν

sōphronoumen

GROWS FROM

⁨σώφρων⁩ (sōphrōn), from ⁨σῶς⁩ (sōs) + ⁨φρήν⁩ (phrēn)

sound or safe in mind

The word describes sound-mindedness, not merely the absence of intoxication. Here that soundness is “for you”: composure becomes a way of being directed toward another person.

ALSO GROWS

sōphrosynē: sound-mindedness or self-command

σωφροσύνη

This related noun appears as “soberness” in Acts 26:25, where clear-minded speech is joined to truth.

sōphronismos: sound judgment or self-discipline

σωφρονισμός

This related word names a sound mind as a steady capacity, echoing the verse’s composed state.

A mind’s visible state does not by itself disclose its direction: apparent extremity can be Godward, while sound-mindedness can serve others.

And when those at his side heard, they went out to seize him, for they said, He is beside himself.
Mark 3:21 · SDVThe same Greek verb for standing outside oneself appears here as a judgment others make from outward appearance.
But he said, I am not raving, most mighty Festus, but I speak forth the words of truth and of a whole mind.
Acts 26:25 · SDVThe verse joins sound-mindedness with truthful speech directed to another person.
For I say, through the favor given to me, to every one among you, not to think of himself above what he ought to think, but to think soundly, as God has divided to each a measure of trust.
Romans 12:3 · SDVSound-mindedness appears as a way of relating to oneself within a community.
And when those at his side heard, they went out to seize him, for they said, He is beside himself.
Mark 3:21 · SDV

“Beside himself” translates the same Greek verb, existēmi, in both verses. Mark shows the phrase as other people’s judgment; here, the same state is named as directed toward God.
