This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees: nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees.

The requested sign is not that the shadow moves farther, but that the measure of decline itself turns back.

The shadow that marks the passing of time is asked to return ten degrees along its path. The verse keeps the reversal concrete: what has gone down changes direction. The ordinary movement is easy; the return is the sign.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This verse loosens the belief that once something has passed its point, its direction cannot change: even the shadow is asked to return.

מַעֲלוֹת

ma'alot

GROWS FROM

עלה

To go up, rise, or ascend.

“ten steps” in this verse is ma'alot. The shadow’s units are called ⁨מַעֲלוֹת⁩, literally steps or ascents, from ⁨עלה⁩, “to go up.” The shadow goes down by a sequence named with upward movement, then is asked to reverse that sequence, a vertical tension hidden by “degrees.”

ALSO GROWS

alah: To go up or ascend.

עָלָה

This verb is the root of ma’alot, the ascending steps by which the shadow’s movement is measured.

aliyah: An ascent or upper chamber.

עֲלִיָּה

It carries the same upward movement that gives ma’alot its sense of steps or ascents.

יָשׁוּב

yashuv

GROWS FROM

שׁוּב

To turn back or return.

The shadow does not merely descend differently; ⁨יָשׁוּב⁩ makes it turn back along the path it has already taken. This root names a change of direction, while the context shows whether that turning is a return or a turning away.

ALSO GROWS

teshuvah: Return or turning.

תְּשׁוּבָה

The noun carries the root’s sense of coming back, as the shadow is asked to do.

meshubah: Turning away or backsliding.

מְשׁוּבָה

This branch shows that the root describes a change of direction; here, the direction is back along the shadow’s course.

יְחִזְקִיָּהוּ

Yeḥizqiyyahu

GROWS FROM

חזק

To be strong, firm, or strengthened.

The name Hezekiah carries ⁨חזק⁩, “strength,” together with the divine name Yah: “Yahweh strengthens.” The speaker requesting a sign bears a name that compresses strength into its source.

ALSO GROWS

chazaq: To be strong or firm.

חָזַק

This is the strength-root inside Hezekiah’s name.

chizzeq: To strengthen or make strong.

חִזֵּק

This form makes the name’s sense active: strength is given or established.

Scripture treats the sky’s regular movement and light as changeable signs, not fixed scenery.

Who speaks to the sun, and it does not rise; who seals up the stars.
Job 9:7 · SDVThe sun’s rising and the stars’ visibility are subject to command, so their usual course is not an untouchable frame.
And the sun stood, and the moon hushed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood in the midst of the heavens, and did not hurry to come in for about a whole day.
Joshua 10:13 · SDVThe sun’s descent is halted, making the heavens’ movement itself part of the sign.
And the fourth messenger sounds, and the third part of the sun is struck, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so that the third part of them is darkened, and the day does not shine for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
Revelation 8:12 · SDVThe sun, moon, and stars are darkened, disrupting the sky’s familiar pattern.
Turn back our captivity, O LORD, as the channels of the south.
Psalm 126:4 · SDV

The same ⁨שׁוּב⁩ root appears in “Turn again”: here it names restoration. The streams give that return an image of a changed landscape, opening the shadow’s backward movement into a wider scriptural pattern of return.
