King James wording
King James Version
And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy.THE KEY
Beneath “recover” is the Hebrew image of gathering a person out of the condition that covers him.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks of the moment a way back becomes speakable: you can be gathered out from what has marked your body, and a condition does not contain your whole identity. The first voice naming that possibility belongs to a servant girl, so insight and dignity do not depend on social rank. Healing enters the scene as a path already visible to someone who sees beyond the affliction.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that a word of healing can come only from someone powerful or socially equal to you; here, the possibility first arrives through a servant girl’s voice.
THE ROOT
יֶאֱסֹף
yeʾĕsōp
GROWS FROM
אסף
Gather, collect, take in.
“gather him from his leprosy” in this verse is yeʾĕsōp. The verb translated “recover” carries the image of gathering Naaman out from his affliction. The person is pictured as someone who can be collected back from the condition covering him, rather than being reduced to it.
ALSO GROWS
ʾāsîp: The gathering in of the harvest.
אָסִיף
The same root gathers what has grown in the field; here, it pictures a person being gathered out from affliction.
məʾassēp: One who gathers those at the rear, a rear guard.
מְאַסֵּף
This branch gathers those who might otherwise be left behind, echoing the verse’s image of a person gathered out of what confines him.
THE PATTERN
A word can open a path through which the afflicted are gathered back into wholeness.
Then he went down and immersed himself seven times in Jordan, according to the word of the man of God. And his flesh returned like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. And when he saw them, he said to them, Go, present yourselves to the priests. And it came to pass, that as they went, they were cleansed.THE THREAD
And the feast of reaping, the first-ripened of your work, which you sow in the field. And the feast of gathering in, at the going out of the year, when you gather in your work from the field.“Gathered in” comes from אָסַף (ʾāsap, “gather, collect”), the same root behind the servant girl’s word for “recover.” One use gathers the field’s yield in; the other pictures a man gathered out from the condition covering him.
