King James wording
King James Version
And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?THE KEY
The same Hebrew root that describes the armed host circling the city soon describes the fire around Elisha, so being surrounded does not mean the threat has the whole field.
THE MEANING
You can wake into a situation where danger seems to have closed every exit; “how shall we do?” gives that constriction its voice. The alarm is real, but it is not the whole field: the same word for “compassed” soon describes the fire around Elisha, still unseen by the servant.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
If danger surrounds me, then danger is all there is.
THE ROOT
סוֹבֵב
sōvēv
GROWS FROM
סבב
sābab: to turn, circle, or surround
“circled” in this verse is sōvēv. Hebrew uses סוֹבֵב (sōvēv) for the armed ring around the city; the same root returns when fire surrounds Elisha. The repeated word gives the circle a second meaning: its shape can hold a threat and an unseen presence at once.
ALSO GROWS
sāvīv: around; all around
סָבִיב
This form describes the LORD as surrounding his people in Psalm 125:2, turning the same image of enclosure toward protection.
sᵉvīvōt: round about; surrounding
סְבִיבוֹת
This form appears in 2 Kings 6:17 for the horses and chariots of fire around Elisha, repeating the root from this verse.
THE PATTERN
The threat you can see does not exhaust what surrounds you.
As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people, from now to the ages. Therefore, since we also have so great a cloud of witnesses lying around us, setting down every weight and falling short that so easily wraps around us, let us run the race lying before us, remaining under it.THE THREAD
And Elisha prayed and said, LORD, I pray you, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and look, the mountain was filled with horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. The Hebrew repeats the root סבב: in verse 15 the armed host surrounds the city; in verse 17 the fiery horses surround Elisha. The danger remains real, but the word for its enclosure also names a presence the servant cannot yet see.
