This verse in the King James

King James wording
And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there.

The shock is not that they reach the enemy’s camp, but that the place is empty of the people who made it frightening.

You meet the feared place at its edge and find it empty of the people you expected. The verse lets the shock of “behold” register before it explains how the absence came to be.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The danger that once occupied this place is still waiting there.

וַיָּקֻמוּ

wayyaqumu

GROWS FROM

קום

qum

to rise, stand, or be established

“rose up” in this verse is wayyaqumu. English makes their rising sound like a small prelude. This root also gives words for a place and for setting something up, joining the act of rising to the question of who stands or remains established. They rise, then find no one standing in the camp.

ALSO GROWS

maqom: place; a place to stand

מָקוֹם

The word extends the root’s sense of standing into the place where someone stands or remains.

heqim: to raise, set up, or establish

הֵקִים

This form shows the root can describe not only rising oneself but causing something to stand.

The expected presence disappears, making absence itself the decisive discovery.

Yet he crossed over, and look, he was not; I sought him, but he could not be found.
Psalm 37:36 · SDVThe sought figure’s absence becomes the discovery that overturns the expectation of finding him there.
And he said to them, Do not be stunned. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. See the place where they laid him.
Mark 16:6 · SDVAt the place where they expect to find Jesus, his absence is the revelation that changes the scene.
Therefore the wicked do not stand in the judgment, nor those who miss the mark in the assembly of the aligned.
Psalm 1:5 · SDV

The Hebrew root ⁨קום⁩ (qum), “rise” or “stand,” appears in both passages. In this verse it marks the lepers rising toward the camp; in Psalm 1:5, it asks who can stand in judgment, linking rising with the place one can occupy.
