This verse in the King James

King James wording
And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

The verse names Tamar as a palm and Absalom with wholeness in his name, yet leaves the word “love” to be judged by what it becomes.

This verse speaks now whenever a feeling claims the name of love: the word itself does not yet tell whether the other person is being held in care. Tamar is named in her own right and placed within her family, while Amnon’s love is the sentence’s unresolved final note.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that someone’s feeling of love necessarily makes their desire safe and loving to the person they desire.

וַיֶּאֱהָבֶהָ

wayye’ehaveha

GROWS FROM

אהב

ʾ-h-b

To love or have affection for.

“loved” in this verse is wayye’ehaveha. The root names love or affection, but the word alone does not tell whether the other person is treated with care. In verse 15 this same root returns beside hatred, exposing how little the label by itself reveals about the relationship.

ALSO GROWS

ahavah: Love, affection

אַהֲבָה

The noun shares the root behind Amnon’s feeling, keeping love as the passage’s central question.

ahuv: Beloved, loved one

אָהוּב

This branch names the person receiving love, bringing the attention back to Tamar rather than only Amnon’s feeling.

תָּמָר

tamar

GROWS FROM

תמר

t-m-r

Palm tree, especially the date palm.

Tamar’s name is also the Hebrew word for a palm tree, a concrete image hidden when the name is read only as a label. The verse gives her this name before it ends on Amnon’s feeling.

ALSO GROWS

tamar: Palm tree, date palm

תָּמָר

The name Tamar carries the ordinary Hebrew word for the tree.

temarim: Date palms

תְּמָרִים

The plural preserves the same word-family and its concrete image.

אַבְשָׁלוֹם

Avshalom

GROWS FROM

שלם

sh-l-m

To be whole or complete.

Absalom’s name contains shalom, meaning wholeness. That name sits within the family map of this verse, while the nature of Amnon’s love remains unresolved.

ALSO GROWS

shalom: Wholeness

שָׁלוֹם

This is the name’s recognizable component and the meaning it carries.

shalem: Whole, complete

שָׁלֵם

This form shares the same root and makes the name’s wholeness connection visible.

Love becomes legible through how it treats the person it names as beloved.

Then Amnon hated her exceedingly, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, Rise, go away.
2 Samuel 13:15 · SDVThe feeling named love is set against a hatred that grows greater, exposing the gap between the name and what the relationship becomes.
Love is slow to heat, and is kind. It does not boil, does not brag, and does not swell.
1 Corinthians 13:4 · SDVLove is described through its character and treatment of others, not merely through the feeling’s name.
Little children, let us not love in word, nor in the tongue, but in works and in truth.
1 John 3:18 · SDVThe verse places love’s words beside the evidence of its actions.
Then Amnon hated her exceedingly, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, Rise, go away.
2 Samuel 13:15 · SDV

The same root ⁨אהב⁩ (ahav, love) reappears in the phrase “the love wherewith he had loved her,” set against hatred that becomes greater. That repetition makes the first verse’s single word “loved” carry a question the sentence has not yet answered: what does this love mean for Tamar?
