This verse in the King James

King James wording
But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.

David is called Israel’s lamp because one person’s life can carry a whole people’s light.

David is in mortal danger; Abishai kills the Philistine who strikes him, and David’s men bind him by oath from returning to battle. Their words make a vulnerable life more than private: the light they see in him belongs to all Israel. His death would mean the people’s lamp going out.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

כבה

kavah

To go out or extinguish.

“snuff out” in this verse is tekhabbeh. This root can describe a flame going out or someone putting it out. Here the men fear that David’s death will extinguish the lamp named for all Israel, carrying the loss from one life to a whole people.

יִכְבֶּה

In 1 Samuel 3:3, the lamp of God “was not yet gone out.” The same root ties the sanctuary’s lamp to the threatened lamp of Israel.

Scripture casts a people’s continuance as light carried by a lamp that can go out or be kept burning.

And before the lamp of God was quenched in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, Samuel lay down to sleep.

Isaiah 42:3 · SDV

Isaiah uses ⁨יְכַבֶּנָּה⁩ (yekhabbenah, “he will extinguish it”), from ⁨כבה⁩ (kavah, “go out; extinguish”), for a smoking wick that is not put out. Here David’s men fear that his death will extinguish Israel’s lamp, carrying the same flame-image from a wick to a life that bears meaning for a people.
