King James wording
King James Version
And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.THE KEY
Kingship is presented as something the people can see and hear: royal clothing, a seat, and a public address.
THE MEANING
You encounter authority through more than a title: it becomes visible in what someone wears, where someone sits, and how someone speaks before others. The verse holds public power as a complete scene of dress, seat, and address.
THE ROOT
δημηγορέω
dēmēgoreō
GROWS FROM
δῆμος + ἀγορεύω
To address the people publicly; the compound joins the people with speaking before an assembly.
“addressed them” in this verse is dēmēgoreō. The Greek word binds speech to the people gathered to hear it. Herod’s words belong to a public scene where authority is presented and received.
ALSO GROWS
dēmos: the people as a civic body
δῆμος
The address is directed toward people gathered together, not a private listener.
agoreuō: to speak publicly, in an assembly
ἀγορεύω
This branch gives the address its public setting and makes the audience part of the scene.
ἐνδυσάμενος
endysamenos
GROWS FROM
ἐνδύω
To put on or clothe; to enter into a garment.
“clothed in royal robes” in this verse is endysamenos. The verb makes royal clothing an act: Herod puts on what visibly marks his rank. The same Greek verb can describe taking on a way of being, so clothing language reaches beyond fabric.
ALSO GROWS
éndyma: garment, clothing
ἔνδυμα
The noun names what is put on and gives the verb’s action a visible form.
endýsasthe: put on, clothe yourselves
ἐνδύσασθε
This form is used for putting on the new man in Ephesians 4:24, where clothing language describes an adopted way of being.
THE PATTERN
Public authority becomes legible through visible display, an occupied seat, and speech before others.
When he showed the riches of his kingdom's weight and the weighty adornment of his greatness, many days, even a hundred and eighty days. The king spoke, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the strength of my might, and for the weight of my majesty? When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down upon the judgment step, in a place spread with stone, which in Hebrew is called Gabbatha.THE THREAD
and that you put on the new human, which according to God has been created in alignment and in the setting-apart of truth. The Greek verb translated “arrayed” here is the same verb translated “put on” in this verse. The shared clothing image can describe visible rank or a way of being: Herod wears royal status outwardly, while Ephesians uses the same language for the new man.
