This verse in the King James

King James wording
And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

A disciple’s loyalty can look like refusing to let a teacher walk into the crowd.

You can mean to enter a charged situation and still be met by people who do not permit your next step. Their refusal stands between intention and action; here, restraint can be a form of care.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that sincere intention must be obeyed, or that being stopped means being abandoned.

εἴων

eiōn from eáō

GROWS FROM

ἐάω

To allow, permit, or let be.

Here “suffered” carries its older sense of allowing: the disciples do not permit Paul to enter. The same verb can describe either allowing movement or withholding permission, making their refusal the hinge of the verse.

ALSO GROWS

eíasan: They let [the boat] fall away (Acts 27:32).

εἴασαν

The same verb names permission for something to move away; here the disciples withhold permission for Paul to move into the crowd.

eásei: Will allow (1 Corinthians 10:13; KJV: “will not suffer”).

ἐάσει

This form also means permit, showing that the word concerns what is allowed to happen.

A person’s intention is not the only voice in a decision; trusted companions can offer resistance before action.

Steady are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
Proverbs 27:6 · SDVA friend’s painful honesty can resist what would otherwise feel easier in the moment.
Without counsel, plans are broken, but in a multitude of counselors they stand.
Proverbs 15:22 · SDVA person’s plans gain steadiness when they are opened to the voices of others.
And when we heard these things, both we and those of that place were urging him not to go up to Jerusalem.
Acts 21:12 · SDVCompanions voice restraint when someone intends to proceed.
Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat, and let her fall away.
Acts 27:32 · SDV

The same verb, ⁨ἐάω⁩, appears here as ⁨εἴασαν⁩, “let.” In Acts 19 it names withholding permission for Paul to enter; here it names permitting the boat to fall away, showing how the word turns on allowing movement or holding it back.
