King James wording
King James Version
And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.THE KEY
They are brought through first; only then can they recognize and name the place where they have landed.
THE MEANING
You can be brought through danger before you understand where you are. Recognition follows arrival: the place beneath your feet already has a name, even while your bearings are returning.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Not yet knowing where you have landed does not mean you are still lost; being brought through and finding your bearings can come in that order.
THE ROOT
διασωθέντες
diasōthentes
GROWS FROM
σῴζω
sōzō
to deliver, bring safely through
“had been delivered through” in this verse is diasōthentes. The Greek verb carries the sense of being brought safely through, not merely slipping away. The verse places that deliverance before recognition: first they reach safety, then they learn the island’s name.
ALSO GROWS
diasōzō: bring safely through, preserve from danger
διασῴζω
This is the verb family behind “escaped” here and in the account of the shipwreck’s survivors reaching land.
sōtēria: deliverance, safety
σωτηρία
This noun names the condition the verb leads toward: being brought through danger.
sōtēr: deliverer
σωτήρ
This word names one who brings another through, keeping the focus on deliverance rather than escape by one’s own power.
THE PATTERN
Deliverance carries people through danger to the far side, where they can recognize where they are.
And the rest, some on planks, and some on pieces of the ship. And so it came about that they were all delivered safely to land. And the LORD delivered Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the lip of the sea.who once refused to yield, while the slowness to heat of God waited in the days of Noah, as the ark was being built, in which few, eight living souls, were delivered through water.THE THREAD
And the rest, some on planks, and some on pieces of the ship. And so it came about that they were all delivered safely to land.Acts 27:44 uses the same Greek verb, διασῴζω (diasōzō, bring safely through), for the survivors reaching land. Acts 28:1 begins after that arrival: only once they are safe can they identify the island as Melita.
