This verse in the King James

King James wording
And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers.

A real act can happen before the one doing it fully perceives what it means.

An action can be real while its meaning remains unseen to the one acting. This verse names ignorance as a failure of perception and still says, “ye did it”; it holds the deed and the unseen together. The same human limit reaches both the people and those who lead them.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that a person always fully understands an act as they do it is undone; the verse still names the act as theirs.

ἀγνοίᾳ

agnoia

GROWS FROM

Greek stem ⁨νο-⁩/⁨νοε-⁩ (no-/noe-)

Perceive, understand, think; with the privative ⁨ἀ-⁩, the word marks an absence of perception.

“without knowing” in this verse is agnoia. This word belongs to the family of ⁨νοέω⁩, “to perceive, understand,” and carries a privative beginning: a lack of perceiving. “Ignorance” can sound like missing facts; this word points toward not grasping what one is doing, while the sentence still names the action.

ALSO GROWS

nous: Mind; perception or understanding.

νοῦς

The word family points to perception itself, so ignorance names a gap in grasping, not simply a blank store of facts.

agnoeō: Not know; fail to understand or recognize.

ἀγνοέω

This related verb appears in Luke 23:34, where people “know not what they do,” making the gap between action and perception explicit.

noeō: Perceive; understand; take in with the mind.

νοέω

It names the perception that the word for ignorance lacks: seeing what an action means as it is done.

Scripture can hold a deed and a failure to perceive that deed’s meaning in view at the same time.

Who can tell the wanderings apart? From what is hidden, cleanse me.
Psalm 19:12 · SDVThe psalm names errors that escape understanding, echoing the gap between action and awareness.
Then Jesus said, Father, release them, for they do not know what they are doing. And they parted his garments, and cast lots.
Luke 23:34 · SDVThe same Greek word family places failure to perceive alongside an act that is plainly still being done.
God looked over the times of not knowing, but now he commands all people everywhere to turn.
Acts 17:30 · SDVThe same noun names ignorance as a condition that can be brought into view and turned from.
Then Jesus said, Father, release them, for they do not know what they are doing. And they parted his garments, and cast lots.
Luke 23:34 · SDV

Luke uses ⁨ἀγνοέω⁩ (agnoeō, “not perceive” or “not know”) for “know not,” from the same ⁨νο-⁩/⁨νοε-⁩ word family as ⁨ἄγνοια⁩ here. The verse places that unseeing beside a plea to release them, holding the deed and its consequence together.
