This verse in the King James

King James wording
Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:

The announcement of the aligned one exposes a reversal: the people who hear it can become the ones who hand him over.

The verse speaks now as an accusation: hearing the Just One announced does not mean you stand with him. You can receive the message and still become the one who hands him over; the hearer and the betrayer occupy the same present tense.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that knowing or honoring prophetic words guarantees loyalty to the one they announce; a hearer can know the message and still betray its subject.

προδόται

prodotai

GROWS FROM

δίδωμι

didōmi

To give; in compounds, to hand or give over.

“handers over” in this verse is prodotai. English “betrayers” can hide the act inside the word: these are people who hand someone over. The verse makes the announcement and the handing over part of one unfolding action.

ALSO GROWS

prodidōmi: To betray, to hand over.

προδίδωμι

This verb belongs to the word family behind “betrayers,” revealing betrayal as an act of giving someone over.

paradidōmi: To hand over, deliver up.

παραδίδωμι

This related compound carries the same give-over root and illuminates the verse’s central action.

δικαίου

dikaiou

GROWS FROM

δίκη

dikē

Justice, what is right.

The English title “Just One” can sound like a courtroom label. Its word family connects the person announced to alignment itself, so the accusation turns on what the hearers do with alignment embodied and arriving.

ALSO GROWS

dikaiosynē: Righteousness, alignment.

δικαιοσύνη

The shared word family links the Just One to alignment as a way of being, not merely a title.

dikaioō: To justify, declare right.

δικαιόω

This branch shows the family also describes the act of recognizing or declaring what is aligned.

Voices that announce what is right are often answered with violence by those who hear them.

But they were contrary, and rebelled against you, and threw your instruction behind their backs, and killed your prophets, who testified against them to turn them back to you, and they wrought great spurnings.
Nehemiah 9:26 · SDVThe verse joins rejection of the message to violence against the prophets who speak it.
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!
Matthew 23:37 · SDVThe sent voices are met with violence even as the verse speaks of gathering and refusal.
He who did not spare his own Son, but handed him over for us all, how will he not also favor us with all things along with him?
Romans 8:32 · SDV

Acts calls its hearers ⁨προδόται⁩ (prodotai, “betrayers”), from the ⁨δίδωμι⁩ (didōmi, “give”) word family; Romans uses ⁨παραδίδωμι⁩ (paradidōmi, “hand over”) for the Son being delivered up. The shared root keeps the act visible across both verses, while the different agents and purposes deepen its meaning.
