This verse in the King James

King James wording
That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;

The telling phrase is “to themselves”: they make music like David, but direct their invention toward a world of their own.

This verse shows how artistry can build a private world of pleasure: these people devise music for themselves and take David as their model. The music’s polish does not reveal what it serves; “to themselves” does. The verse speaks now wherever cultivated expression becomes a shelter from the lives around it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A beautiful or skillful expression does not by itself mean that the life around it is whole; here the music serves the makers themselves.

חָשְׁבוּ

chashvu

GROWS FROM

חשב

ḥ-sh-b

To think, reckon, devise, or plan.

“reckon” in this verse is chashvu. The word translated “invent” carries the sense of thought and devising: this music is deliberately shaped, not incidental. The root makes the phrase “to themselves” especially revealing, their planning turns inward, toward their own pleasure.

ALSO GROWS

chashav: To think, reckon, or plan.

חָשַׁב

It shows that their music is the product of directed thought.

machashavah: A thought, plan, or purpose.

מַחֲשָׁבָה

This branch brings the verse’s quiet question into view: what purpose does their carefully made music serve?

דָּוִד

David

GROWS FROM

דוד

d-w-d

Beloved; the name carries the sense of the beloved.

David’s name holds the nature of the beloved, and his name gives these musicians a model to invoke. Yet the verse places that model beside “to themselves”: the name they borrow does not settle the direction their music takes.

ALSO GROWS

dod: A beloved one or close relation.

דּוֹד

It reveals the beloved nature carried by David’s name.

dodi: My beloved.

דּוֹדִי

This form makes the name’s relational sense audible, sharpening the contrast with music directed back toward oneself.

The direction of a person’s craft is disclosed by what it serves: music can turn inward or be directed toward praise.

Four thousand kept the gates, and four thousand praised the LORD with the vessels of song which I made, said David, to praise with them.
1 Chronicles 23:5 · SDVDavid’s instruments are expressly made for praising the LORD, giving a different direction to the musical craft Amos describes.
Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and songs of breath, singing and plucking the strings in your heart to the Lord.
Ephesians 5:19 · SDVThe singing is shared among people, yet its melody is directed “to the Lord,” showing where the music’s attention rests.
Four thousand kept the gates, and four thousand praised the LORD with the vessels of song which I made, said David, to praise with them.
1 Chronicles 23:5 · SDV

Both verses join David with music and instruments, but they show different directions: David’s instruments are made “to praise” the LORD, while Amos’s musicians devise theirs “to themselves.” That contrast makes the direction of the music, not its craftsmanship, the revealing detail.
