This verse in the King James

King James wording
That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this.

The same line that claims the nations as possession also names them as bearing the LORD’s own nature.

The LORD’s rebuilding reaches beyond what has fallen: the restored house of David lays claim to Edom’s remnant and to the nations, which are called by the LORD’s name. The verse holds territorial possession and the nations’ bearing of that name side by side; the expansive promise does not erase the force of the claim.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This verse undoes the belief that the LORD’s restored rule stops at Israel’s borders: it names nations beyond Israel among those called by his name.

יִירְשׁוּ

yirshū

GROWS FROM

ירשׁ

y-r-sh

To take possession or inherit; in a causative form, to dispossess.

“take hold of” in this verse is yirshū. This root can name inheriting a holding and, in another stem, dispossessing its current holders. That makes the promise materially territorial; the following words about the nations bearing the LORD’s name sit beside that claim and do not cancel it.

ALSO GROWS

hôrîš: Dispossess or drive out.

הוֹרִישׁ

This branch keeps the force of the territorial claim audible: possession can involve displacing those who hold the land.

môrāšâ: Inheritance or inherited possession.

מוֹרָשָׁה

The same root can describe a holding received as inheritance, placing inheritance and territorial claim within one word-family.

נִקְרָא

niqrāʾ

GROWS FROM

קרא

q-r-ʾ

To call, summon, proclaim, or name.

The passive form leaves the nations as recipients of the call: the LORD’s name is called over them. ⁨שְׁמִי⁩ (shemi, “my name”) carries the identity and nature of the one who names them, so the claim reaches beyond land into belonging.

ALSO GROWS

miqrāʾ: Convocation or public reading.

מִקְרָא

A call can gather people as an assembly, giving the nations named in Amos a place within the LORD’s gathering.

qeriʾāh: Calling, cry, or reading.

קְרִיאָה

This branch holds the sense of a voice reaching outward; being called by the LORD’s name carries more than an anonymous label.

The LORD’s restored rule extends to peoples beyond Israel and names them as his own.

And many nations will cling to the LORD in that day, and they will be my people, and I will pitch my tent in the midst of you, and you will know that the LORD of hosts sent me to you.
Zechariah 2:11 · SDVMany nations become the LORD’s people, expressing restoration as belonging that reaches beyond Israel.
Them also will I bring to my set-apart mountain, and gladden them in my house of prayer. Their ascending offerings and their sacrifices shall be received with favor upon my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.
Isaiah 56:7 · SDVThe LORD’s house opens to all peoples, extending the reach of restored worship.
So that the remnant of humankind might seek out the LORD, and all the nations, upon whom my nature is called, says the LORD, who makes all these things.
Acts 15:17 · SDVThis New Testament echo keeps the nations called by the LORD’s name within the promise of restoration.
Even every one who is called by my name, for I have created him to bear my weight; I have shaped him, yes, I have made him.
Isaiah 43:7 · SDV

Isaiah uses the same Hebrew call-and-name construction as Amos. It makes the force of bearing the name explicit: the one called by it is created and formed by the LORD, sharpening Amos’s striking claim about the nations.
