This verse in the King James

King James wording
It is he that buildeth his stories in the heaven, and hath founded his troop in the earth; he that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name.

Amos pictures the heavens as upward chambers and the earth as a set foundation, while the sea still answers its builder’s call.

You inhabit a world pictured as a dwelling: its upper spaces rise, its earth is established, and its waters move at a summons. The sea is not beyond the reach of the One who calls it and pours it across the earth. “The LORD is his name” identifies that ordering presence by nature, not as a bare label.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that the world supports itself or that the sea lies beyond the LORD’s command: the earth’s stability and the waters’ movement belong to the same named power.

מַעֲלוֹתָיו

maʿalotav

GROWS FROM

עלה

Rise, go up, ascend.

“stairways” in this verse is maʿalotav. The KJV’s “stories” carries the sense of elevated levels or upper chambers. Its root means “rise,” so the heavens appear as an ascending structure rather than a flat backdrop, with the earth established beneath it.

ALSO GROWS

maʿalah: Ascent, step, or upper chamber.

מַעֲלָה

This related word links an elevated chamber with the act of going upward.

ʿaliyah: Ascent or going up.

עֲלִיָּה

It makes the upward motion inside “stories” easier to see: these are levels that rise.

יְסָדָהּ

yəsādāh

GROWS FROM

יסד

Lay a foundation, establish.

“founded” in this verse is yəsādāh. The root connects the act of founding with the basis that lets a structure stand. Here the earth is deliberately set in place beneath the structure, completing the verse’s image of ordered heights and foundations.

ALSO GROWS

yesod: Foundation or basis.

יְסוֹד

This noun makes explicit the foundational sense carried by “founded.”

mosad: Foundation or established base.

מוֹסָד

It carries the same root into the idea of a structure set firmly in place.

Creation is pictured as an ordered dwelling whose heights and foundations are established and whose waters remain within divine command.

And God said, "Let the waters beneath the heavens be pooled into one place, and let the dry land be seen." And it was so.
Genesis 1:9 · SDVWaters gather and dry land appears at a spoken command, echoing Amos’s sea summoned and poured across the earth.
He lays the earth upon its footing, and it does not totter for the ages and ages.
Psalm 104:5 · SDVThe earth’s stability is expressed as a foundation deliberately laid, as in Amos’s image of the earth being founded.
And, you, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands.
Hebrews 1:10 · SDVBoth earth and heavens appear as parts of a made order, with the earth founded beneath the heavens.
He lays the beams of his upper rooms in the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he walks upon the wings of the breath.
Psalm 104:3 · SDV

Amos’s “stories,” ⁨מַעֲלוֹת⁩ (maʿalot, “ascents” or “upper chambers”), comes from ⁨עלה⁩ (ʿālāh, “rise, go up”). Psalm’s “chambers,” ⁨מַעֲלִיּוֹתָיו⁩ (maʿaliyotav, “his upper chambers”), shares that root family, opening Amos’s image into a dwelling built above the waters.
