This verse in the King James

King James wording
In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks.

Mourning here is not a passing instant: the verse measures it in three full cycles of seven days.

Grief can occupy a whole season of your life, and the verse names its duration without explaining it away. A measured span does not make sorrow small; mourning remains real through the weeks it takes up.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that mourning should be over quickly loses force here: sorrow that continues for weeks is still named plainly as mourning.

מִתְאַבֵּל

mitʾabbēl

GROWS FROM

אבל

ʾ-b-l

To mourn, grieve, or lament.

The Hebrew form presents Daniel as actively mourning across the span; the same root names both the grief and the mourner. What English presents as one emotional state is also an ongoing act.

ALSO GROWS

ʾēvel: Mourning or grief.

אֵבֶל

The noun makes visible the grief that Daniel is living through.

ʾāvēl: A mourner; one who grieves.

אָבֵל

The root names the person who carries the mourning as well as the grief itself.

שָׁבֻעִים

shavuʿim

GROWS FROM

שבע

sh-b-ʿ

Seven; a count of seven from which the word for a week is formed.

The Hebrew counts three weeks of days, and the word for weeks carries the root for seven. The duration is held in a repeated measure: three sets of seven days.

ALSO GROWS

sheva: Seven.

שֶׁבַע

This is the count carried inside the word for weeks.

sheviʿi: Seventh.

שְׁבִיעִי

The ordinal branch shows the same root marking position within a counted sequence.

Mourning is treated as a real span of human life, with its own duration and expression.

And they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is across Jordan, and there they wailed a great lamentation, heavy beyond measure. And he made a mourning for his father seven days.
Genesis 50:10 · SDVThe verse gives mourning a defined span of seven days, making grief visible as something that takes time.
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to leap.
Ecclesiastes 3:4 · SDVMourning has its own time alongside other human seasons.
Truly, truly, I say to you, that you will weep and wail, but the world will rejoice; you will be pained, but your pain will become joy.
John 16:20 · SDVSorrow is named fully and then described as capable of turning, so its reality and its change occupy the same line.
And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the face of the God of the heavens.
Nehemiah 1:4 · SDV

Nehemiah’s “mourned” comes from the same Hebrew root ⁨אבל⁩ (ʾ-b-l), meaning to mourn. The shared root links Daniel’s sustained state with mourning that stretches through days and is expressed in weeping.
