This verse in the King James

King James wording
And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it.

The multitude he brings low lifts his heart, but it gives him no strength.

This verse sets two motions beside each other: the heart rises as multitudes are brought down, yet the triumph does not make its holder strong. It speaks now wherever victory looks like proof of security: the fall of others and the strength of the victor are not the same thing.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that dominating many proves you have become strong; the verse separates the defeated multitude from the victor’s strength.

וְרָם

weram

GROWS FROM

רום

rum

rise, be high, exalt

“lifted up” in this verse is weram. The text says his heart rises as multitudes fall. The root also names height, giving the heart’s ascent a spatial force; the next clause says that ascent yields no strength.

ALSO GROWS

ram: high, exalted

רָם

The adjective carries the same sense of elevation as the heart’s rising.

marom: height, high place

מָרוֹם

This related word makes the root’s image of ascent concrete.

יָעוֹז

ya'oz

GROWS FROM

עזז

ʿ-z-z

be strong, show strength, prevail

“made strong” in this verse is ya'oz. The Hebrew verb means to be strong or prevail. The multitude can fall without transferring strength to the one who brings them down; the verse separates visible victory from becoming strong.

ALSO GROWS

ʿoz: strength, might

עֹז

This noun gives the strength the verse says the victory does not produce.

ʿazuz: mighty, powerful

עָזוּז

This related form describes the quality the conqueror’s victory fails to secure.

וְהִפִּיל

vehiffil

GROWS FROM

נפל

n-p-l

fall

“causes to fall” in this verse is vehiffil. The verse places a rising heart over falling bodies: one person causes many to fall while his own heart rises. The final clause refuses to let this reversal of height and descent count as strength.

ALSO GROWS

naphal: fall

נָפַל

This is the basic motion behind the action of bringing others down.

mappalah: downfall, ruin

מַפָּלָה

The same root can name the resulting fall, echoing the many brought down in the verse.

A heart can rise through visible victory while that victory fails to make the victor strong.

Then your heart is raised high, and you let the LORD your God slip from you, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;
Deuteronomy 8:14 · SDVAbundance lifts the heart, showing that outward gain can coincide with inward elevation.
But when he grew strong, his heart was lifted high toward the pit; for he broke trust with the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to make smoke rise upon the altar of incense.
2 Chronicles 26:16 · SDVA king’s apparent strength accompanies a rising heart that leads toward his downfall.
So let the one who thinks he stands watch, lest he fall.
1 Corinthians 10:12 · SDVThe appearance of standing does not guarantee security from a fall.
Then your heart is raised high, and you let the LORD your God slip from you, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;
Deuteronomy 8:14 · SDV

Daniel’s “lifted up” and Deuteronomy’s “be lifted up” share ⁨רום⁩ (rum, rise or be high). Deuteronomy places that same ascent of the heart amid abundance, revealing how outward gain can raise the heart without guaranteeing strength.
