This verse in the King James

King James wording
But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;

The dream is not the source of its own meaning: what is concealed becomes knowable when God uncovers it.

What lies beyond your sight is not therefore beyond disclosure. Meaning can become known before the events it names arrive. The verse holds hiddenness and understanding in one movement: what is concealed is brought into view and received as knowledge.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that what you cannot understand now must remain sealed forever; hiddenness is not the same as unknowability.

הוֹדַע

hôdaʿ

GROWS FROM

ידע

Know, recognize, perceive.

“maketh known” in this verse is hôdaʿ. The Aramaic causative form comes from the same ⁨ידע⁩ root as Hebrew yada: it means to cause someone to know. The verse’s movement is from a hidden thing to knowledge received by another; the root can also carry the sense of knowing through encounter, not merely possessing information.

ALSO GROWS

yādaʿ: To know or recognize.

יָדַע

This is the root verb beneath “maketh known”: disclosure leads into knowing.

yōdēaʿ: One who knows.

יוֹדֵעַ

The knowing form keeps the same root consonants and shows the movement from a revealed secret to a knower.

גָּלֵא

gālēʾ

GROWS FROM

גלה

Uncover, reveal, bring into view.

“uncovers” in this verse is gālēʾ. The verse’s Aramaic ⁨גָּלֵא⁩ is cognate with Hebrew ⁨גָּלָה⁩, from the ⁨גלה⁩ family. The root pictures revelation as uncovering: the secret does not explain itself; what was hidden is brought into view.

ALSO GROWS

gālāh: Uncover or reveal.

גָּלָה

This Hebrew cognate makes the verse’s action concrete: revelation brings what is concealed into view.

hitgallāh: Be revealed or become visible.

הִתְגַּלָּה

This form from the same root describes the hidden thing becoming visible, echoing the secret’s disclosure.

אַחֲרִית

ʾaḥarīt

GROWS FROM

אחר

After, behind, what follows.

“Latter” carries the language of what comes after. The verse’s disclosure reaches beyond what is visible now, naming a future horizon while making its meaning known in the present.

ALSO GROWS

ʾaḥar: After or behind.

אַחַר

This root form gives “latter days” its sense of what follows.

ʾaḥarôn: Last or later.

אַחֲרוֹן

This related form carries the same sequence into the idea of what comes later.

What is concealed becomes knowable through disclosure rather than self-interpretation alone.

For the Lord GOD does nothing, unless he uncovers his secret to his servants the prophets.
Amos 3:7 · SDVThe same language of uncovering appears as a hidden secret is revealed.
Therefore do not fear them, for nothing is covered that will not be uncovered, nor hidden that will not be known.
Matthew 10:26 · SDVWhat is covered is shown to be capable of being revealed and known.
But God unveiled them to us through his breath, for the breath searches all things, even the depths of God.
1 Corinthians 2:10 · SDVThe deep and hidden becomes accessible through disclosure.
For the Lord GOD does nothing, unless he uncovers his secret to his servants the prophets.
Amos 3:7 · SDV

Daniel’s Aramaic verb ⁨גָּלֵא⁩ and Amos’s Hebrew ⁨גָּלָה⁩ belong to the same ⁨גלה⁩ family of revealing and uncovering. Amos makes the connection visible: what is hidden as a secret is brought into view.
