This verse in the King James

King James wording
Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

The verse places refuge inside the inheritance, so safety belongs in the middle of the land rather than beyond it.

Three refuge-cities are set apart within the land you are given to inhabit. Protection occupies the middle of that inheritance: refuge belongs inside the place of possession.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that safety must be found outside the life you inhabit: here, refuge is placed in its midst.

GROWS FROM

בדל

b-d-l

To divide, distinguish, or set apart.

“You shall separate” in this verse is tavdil. The verb ⁨תַּבְדִּיל⁩ (tavdil, “you shall set apart”) comes from ⁨בדל⁩ (badal, “divide, distinguish, set apart”). Paired with “in the midst of thy land,” it reveals that a place can be distinct while remaining within the whole.

ALSO GROWS

vayyavdel: And he divided or separated.

וַיַּבְדֵּל

In Genesis 1:4 this root distinguishes light from darkness; here, it marks out distinct places of refuge within the land.

wa’avdil: And I separated or set apart.

וָאַבְדִּל

In Leviticus 20:24 the same root describes being set apart while receiving land to possess, joining distinction with belonging.

Setting apart makes a distinct place within a larger whole.

And God saw the light, that it was good, and God parted the light from the darkness.
Genesis 1:4 · SDVThe separation gives light and darkness distinct places within creation.
At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to lift the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD and minister to him, and to bless in his nature, to this day.
Deuteronomy 10:8 · SDVThe tribe is set apart for a particular role while remaining within the people.
He measured it by its four breaths, and it had a wall all around, five hundred reeds long, and five hundred wide, to make a parting between the set-apart place and the open ground.
Ezekiel 42:20 · SDVA boundary sets the sanctuary apart and gives it a distinct place within the measured whole.
But I have said to you, You shall inherit their land, and I will give it to you to possess, a land flowing with milk and honey. I am the LORD your God, who has separated you from the peoples.
Leviticus 20:24 · SDV

The same root ⁨בדל⁩ (badal, “distinguish or set apart”) appears in ⁨וָאַבְדִּל⁩ (wa’avdil, “I have separated”), alongside the language of receiving and possessing land. The two verses hold distinction and belonging together: what is set apart can still be held within a shared inheritance.
