This verse in the King James

King James wording
Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.

A place set apart becomes a route out of vengeance before violence can multiply.

You encounter protection made concrete here: three places are set apart so a person who causes an unintended death has somewhere to flee before the avenger reaches them. The boundary interrupts another death without making the first one unreal.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that after a death, revenge is the only possible next step: the passage makes room for flight and judgment before vengeance closes in.

תַּבְדִּיל

tabdil

GROWS FROM

בדל

b-d-l

To divide, distinguish, or set apart.

The verb translated “separate” belongs to the same root used for dividing light from darkness and distinguishing one thing from another. Here, separation marks out refuge: a boundary becomes a route away from retaliatory violence.

ALSO GROWS

vayavdel: And he separated or divided.

וַיַּבְדֵּל

Genesis 1:4 uses this form when light is divided from darkness; here, setting the cities apart also creates a consequential distinction.

lehavdil: To distinguish or set apart.

לְהַבְדִּיל

Leviticus 10:10 uses this form for distinguishing between what is holy and common, clean and unclean; the same root marks a boundary that changes how things are treated.

A path to refuge is made reachable and defined before danger arrives.

And if a man does not lie in wait, but God lets him come into his hand, then I set for you a place to which he flees.

Genesis 1:4 · SDV

The verb translated “separate” here comes from the same root as “divided” in Genesis 1:4. In both verses, separation establishes a boundary; here, that boundary gives someone pursued by vengeance a distinct route to refuge.
