What Does Deuteronomy 21:23 Mean?

His corpse does not lodge on the tree through the night, but you surely bury him on that day, for the hanged one is a curse of God; so that your ground, which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance, is not defiled.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

A curse attached to a hanged body can reach beyond the condemned person: left through the night, it defiles the land itself.

This verse places a limit on public exposure: the body is buried that same day, because leaving it overnight defiles the land. The ground you receive as inheritance is implicated in how a condemned body is treated.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A sentence of condemnation gives the community unlimited permission to expose a person’s body.

קִלְלַת

qillelat

GROWS FROM

קלל

To be light or slight; to be treated lightly, dishonored, or cursed.

The word translated “accursed” is the word for a curse, from a root that also describes what is made light or held in low regard. The verse binds the hanged body’s public degradation to the land’s condition: the disgrace cannot remain displayed overnight without reaching the shared ground.

ALSO GROWS

qelalah: Curse

קְלָלָה

This is the noun from the same root, naming the curse attached to the hanged person.

qalôn: Dishonor, disgrace

קָלוֹן

This branch shows how the root’s sense of being made slight reaches public disgrace, the quality made visible by leaving the body exposed.

תִּטַּמֵּא

tittammēʾ

GROWS FROM

טמא

To be or become unclean, impure.

“defiled” in this verse is tittammēʾ. The phrase makes the land itself subject to becoming unclean; the consequence does not stop with the condemned person. The ground that is received as inheritance can bear the mark of what remains on it.

ALSO GROWS

tame: Unclean, impure

טָמֵא

The same root names the state the land is protected from entering.

tumʾah: Uncleanness, impurity

טֻמְאָה

This noun from the same root gives a name to the condition the verse says must not spread to the land.

Defilement can reach the land itself, so the treatment of death and blood becomes part of the ground’s condition.

And the land is soiled. Therefore I visit its crookedness upon it, and the land itself vomits out those who settle in her.
Leviticus 18:25 · SDVThe land itself becomes unclean in response to what is done within it, making defilement a condition of the shared ground.
So you shall not defile the land where you are, for blood defiles the land; and the land cannot be covered over for the blood poured out in it, except by the blood of the one who poured it out.
Numbers 35:33 · SDVBloodshed is described as reaching and defiling the land, so the ground carries the consequence of violence.
And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son they buried in the land of Benjamin, in Zelah, in the grave of Kish his father, and they did all that the king commanded. And after that God was pleaded with for the land.
2 Samuel 21:14 · SDVBurial is followed by the land receiving an answer, joining the treatment of the dead with the land’s condition.
The Anointed One bought us out of the curse of instruction, becoming a curse for us, for it stands written, Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.
Galatians 3:13 · SDV

Galatians repeats the formula about the one hanging on a tree, carrying this verse’s curse language into a claim of deliverance from the curse. The link carries the image of an exposed, cursed body into a claim that people are brought out from under the curse it names.
