This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the LORD hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments;

The same rare verb says both that you declare the LORD yours and that the LORD declares you his, so belonging is spoken in both directions before it takes the shape of keeping.

You are named as the LORD’s treasured possession, and that belonging has a lived shape: keeping all his commandments. The verse holds promise and response together in the life you live now.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that keeping is the price you pay to become God’s own: the verse names you as his own by promise, then describes keeping as the shape of that belonging.

הֶאֱמִירְךָ

he’emirkha

GROWS FROM

אָמַר

⁨אָמַר⁩ (ʾāmar) means to say, speak, or declare.

“declared” in this verse is he’emirkha. The unusual form of ⁨אָמַר⁩ (ʾāmar, say or speak) here means the LORD declares you to be his own. The same verb in the preceding verse describes you declaring the LORD to be your God, a reciprocity that the English word “avouched” can hide.

ALSO GROWS

ʾāmar: to say or speak

אָמַר

The root makes the LORD’s claim a spoken declaration of belonging.

ʾimrāh: a saying or utterance

אִמְרָה

This related word keeps the force of speech in view: the relationship is voiced, not left implied.

לִשְׁמֹר

lishmor

GROWS FROM

שָׁמַר

⁨שָׁמַר⁩ (shamar) means to guard, watch over, or keep.

“guard” in this verse is lishmor. The word for keeping carries the sense of guarding and attending. The commandments are not detached rules here; keeping them is the watchful shape of belonging to the LORD.

ALSO GROWS

shomer: a keeper or guardian

שֹׁמֵר

This branch shows that keeping involves watchful care.

mishmeret: a charge, guard duty, or watch

מִשְׁמֶרֶת

The related word ties keeping to a sustained responsibility, giving “keep” more depth than simple recall or compliance.

Being claimed as God’s own gives a people both a name and a distinct way of life.

Now therefore, if you will truly hear and respond to my voice, and guard my covenant, then you shall be my own treasure from among all peoples, for all the earth is mine.
Exodus 19:5 · SDVGod’s claim as a treasured possession is joined to a life shaped by hearing and keeping his covenant.
Who gave himself for us, that he might loose us from all living without boundary, and cleanse for himself a people that is his own, burning for good works.
Titus 2:14 · SDVBeing gathered as a people for God is expressed in a distinct way of living.
But you are a chosen lineage, a royal priesthood, a set-apart nation, a people made his own, so that you may tell out the excellences of the one who called you out of darkness into his wondrous light.
1 Peter 2:9 · SDVA people named as God’s own carry that identity into the life they show forth.
This day you have declared the LORD to be your God, and to walk in his ways, and to guard his statutes, his commands, and his judgments, and to hear and respond to his voice.
Deuteronomy 26:17 · SDV

The same Hebrew verb, ⁨הֶאֱמַרְתָּ⁩ (he’emarta, you declared), comes from ⁨אָמַר⁩ (ʾāmar, say or speak). You declare the LORD to be your God in verse 17; here the LORD declares you his treasured people, and keeping becomes the lived response within that spoken bond.
