King James wording
King James Version
And thou shalt offer peace offerings, and shalt eat there, and rejoice before the LORD thy God.THE KEY
Wholeness here is something you eat and rejoice in before God, not just an idea you hold.
THE MEANING
This verse holds the offering, the meal, and rejoicing together before the LORD your God. Wholeness is shared and embodied: you receive the meal in God’s presence, and joy belongs there too.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that nearness to God must be joyless or distant: here, eating and rejoicing take place before the LORD.
THE ROOT
שְׁלָמִים
shelamim
GROWS FROM
שלם
To be whole, complete, or sound; in another form, to make good or repay.
“wholeness offerings” in this verse is shelamim. The word rendered “peace offerings” belongs to the same root family as shalom, wholeness. Its setting beside a meal and rejoicing makes that wholeness tangible: it is shared and received in God’s presence.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Wholeness, well-being, peace.
שָׁלוֹם
It reveals the wholeness carried within the offering’s name and connects it to the shared meal.
shalem: Whole, complete, sound.
שָׁלֵם
It echoes the completeness that the meal and rejoicing express together.
shillem: To repay, recompense, or make good.
שִׁלֵּם
This branch shows the root’s wider sense of making good; here, it illuminates the root family without turning the offering into a debt transaction.
THE PATTERN
God’s presence is expressed through shared food and gladness, not only through what happens at an altar.
And on the nobles of the children of Israel he did not stretch out his hand, and they saw God, and they ate and drank. You lay out a table before my face, in full view of those who press me. You make my head rich with oil; my cup is soaked full. And they, holding fast day by day with one passion in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, took their food with gladness and singleness of heart.THE THREAD
And the flesh of the slaughter of his wholeness offerings, for the open hand, shall be eaten the same day that it is brought near. He shall not leave any of it until the morning. The peace offering here is also called shelamim, from the root שלם (sh-l-m), “to be whole or complete.” Its flesh is eaten that same day, bringing the root’s sense of wholeness to the table and tying the offering directly to shared eating.
