King James wording
King James Version
And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men’s hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.THE KEY
The hands make the gods, then the makers become servants of what they made.
THE MEANING
The verse names a present reversal: what human hands make can receive your service while remaining unable to see, hear, eat, or smell. Your service flows toward something that cannot answer through any of the senses named.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that something becomes a living power simply because human hands give it a sacred form.
THE ROOT
וַעֲבַדְתֶּם
vaʿavadtem
GROWS FROM
עבד
The root ʿābad means to work, labor, or serve.
“serve” in this verse is vaʿavadtem. The same root names both labor and service: the maker’s work turns into service to the thing made. The verse exposes how the maker can become bound to the product of their own hands.
ALSO GROWS
ʿeved: servant, worker, or slave
עֶבֶד
This branch shows that serving is a relationship of labor and allegiance, not merely an opinion about an object.
ʿavodah: work or service
עֲבֹדָה
The shared root joins the work that forms the image to the service later directed toward it.
מַעֲשֵׂה
maʿaseh
GROWS FROM
עשה
The root ʿāsāh means to do or make.
The hands belong to אָדָם (ʾadam, human, the ground-being linked to אֲדָמָה (ʾadamah, ground)), and they fashion a maʿaseh, a human work, into a god. Service then bends back toward what the maker shaped, though the shaped thing cannot answer.
ALSO GROWS
ʿāsāh: to do or make
עָשָׂה
The verb names the human action behind the object that later receives service.
maʿasim: deeds or works
מַעֲשִׂים
This plural branch keeps the image inside the wider family of human acts: it is something made, not a living maker.
THE PATTERN
What human beings fashion may receive service, though it has none of the senses through which a living being responds.
Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. What good is the hewn image, that its shaper has hewn it, a poured image, and an instructor of lies, that its shaper leans his full weight upon his own shaping, to make mute nothings?Since then we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think the divine is like gold, or silver, or stone, carved by craft and by human imagining.THE THREAD
You shall not bow down to them, nor serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a zealous God, visiting the crookedness of the fathers upon the children, to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me.The same Hebrew root, עבד (ʿābad, work or serve), appears in “serve them.” It makes Deuteronomy’s point about the bond itself: human service turns toward an image made by human hands.
