This verse in the King James

King James wording
All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

The eye is an appetite: seeing more does not bring it to satiety.

You keep seeing and hearing, yet perception does not arrive at a final point of enough. More can pass through your senses while the demand for more remains open.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that taking in enough will finally make you feel full.

תִּשְׂבַּע

tisbaʿ

GROWS FROM

שׂבע

To be sated, full, or to have enough.

“is not filled” in this verse is tisbaʿ. The verb means reaching satiety, not merely seeing something. The eye keeps receiving, but never arrives at the fullness the word names; the ear is likewise never filled.

ALSO GROWS

śāvēaʿ: Sated or satisfied.

שָׂבֵעַ

It makes explicit the fullness the eye never reaches in this verse.

śōvaʿ: Satiety, fullness, or abundance.

שֹׂבַע

The same root names the state of having enough, sharpening the contrast with an eye that keeps wanting.

Human appetite can keep reaching for more without reaching satiety.

All the toil of humankind is for his mouth, yet the living soul is not filled.
Ecclesiastes 6:7 · SDVEven what sustains the body does not end the appetite; effort and intake can continue without fullness.
Sheol and the place of perishing are never filled, and the eyes of man are never filled.
Proverbs 27:20 · SDVIt states directly that the eyes share the same unending appetite named in Ecclesiastes 1:8.
For all that is in the world, the craving of the flesh, and the craving of the eyes, and the swagger of life, does not come out of the Father, but comes out of the world.
1 John 2:16 · SDVIt names desire of the eyes as a recurring human appetite, echoing the seeing that never reaches enough.
Sheol and the place of perishing are never filled, and the eyes of man are never filled.
Proverbs 27:20 · SDV

“Satisfied” here and “satisfied” in Ecclesiastes 1:8 translate forms of ⁨שׂבע⁩ (śāḇaʿ), to be sated or full. The shared root exposes the same pattern: the eye keeps seeing, yet never reaches satiety.
