This verse in the King James

King James wording
All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.

A life’s length does not reveal its moral alignment: the aligned can perish while the wicked continue.

You live in a world where an aligned person can perish in their alignment while a wicked person lengthens life through wickedness. Longevity is not proof that a life is right, and loss is not proof that the aligned person has failed.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that doing right guarantees a longer life, or that a long life proves rightness.

צַדִּיק

tsaddiq

GROWS FROM

צדק

To be just, right, or aligned.

“aligned one” in this verse is tsaddiq. The root connects the person called righteous with the idea of justice and alignment itself. The verse shows that alignment does not function as a guarantee of survival.

ALSO GROWS

tsedeq: Justice or what is right and aligned.

צֶדֶק

It shows that the verse’s righteous person belongs to a word family about alignment, not a promise of immunity from loss.

tsedaqah: Righteousness or right action.

צְדָקָה

This branch links the person’s character to the quality of their actions, while the verse separates that quality from how long they live.

אֹבֵד

oved

GROWS FROM

אבד

To perish, be lost, or disappear.

“perishes” in this verse is oved. The root can describe both perishing and being lost. Here, loss occurs alongside the person’s alignment, so the verse does not let death serve as proof that their life was misaligned.

ALSO GROWS

avad: To perish or be lost.

אָבַד

This verb gives the verse its stark claim: the aligned person can be lost from life.

avaddon: Destruction or ruin.

אֲבַדּוֹן

This related form extends the root’s sense of loss into ruin, showing how much the English word “perish” can hold.

מַאֲרִיךְ

ma'arikh

GROWS FROM

ארך

To be long, extend, or lengthen.

“lengthens” in this verse is ma'arikh. The same root can describe length in time and slowness in response. The wicked person’s extended life is duration; it is not a measure of alignment.

ALSO GROWS

orekh: Length or duration.

אֹרֶךְ

It makes the link between the verse’s prolonged life and the basic idea of length explicit.

erekh appayim: Slow to flare; patient.

אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם

The same root for length can describe a slow response, showing that extension is a matter of duration, not moral worth.

Length of life and visible prosperity do not reliably measure moral alignment.

Why do the wicked live, grow old, and even grow mighty in strength?
Job 21:7 · SDVJob names the same unsettling pattern: the wicked can live long and grow powerful.
Behold, these are the wicked, at rest in the ages; they overtake strength.
Psalm 73:12 · SDVThe psalmist sees visible prosperity accruing to the ungodly, leaving outward success unable to certify a person’s alignment.
So that you may become children of your Father in the heavens, for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the aligned and on the crooked.
Matthew 5:45 · SDVSun and rain reach both the evil and the good, so shared outward provision does not sort people by moral standing.
The aligned one perishes, and no man lays it upon the heart. Men of faithful love are gathered, and none discerns, for from the face of harm the aligned one is gathered.
Isaiah 57:1 · SDV

Isaiah uses the same Hebrew root ⁨אבד⁩ (ʾ-b-d, perish or be lost) for the righteous person’s disappearance. The repeated root makes clear that the loss of an aligned person does not, by itself, mean their alignment has failed.
