This verse in the King James

King James wording
Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

A life can save everyone and still disappear from the story they tell.

You can carry the insight that opens a way through a crisis and still go unrecognized by the people it preserves. The verse holds both truths together: wisdom has real power, while public remembrance does not reliably follow it. Being forgotten does not undo the deliverance.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that being overlooked means your wisdom had no effect, or that saving others guarantees they will remember you.

זָכַר

zākar

GROWS FROM

זכר

z-k-r

To remember, call to mind, or mention.

“remembered” in this verse is zākar. The root reaches beyond private memory to the act of mentioning or keeping someone in remembrance. The city is delivered, but the rescuer is not carried forward in its speech or memory.

ALSO GROWS

zikkārōn: Memorial or remembrance.

זִכָּרוֹן

A memorial makes remembrance public and lasting; this man receives no such place in the city’s memory.

hizkîr: To mention or call to mind.

הִזְכִּיר

The verse’s silence about the man is also a failure to mention him: his wisdom changes the city’s fate, but his name is left out.

חָכָם

ḥākām

GROWS FROM

חכם

ḥ-k-m

Wisdom expressed as skill and discernment.

“wise” in this verse is ḥākām. This is wisdom that works: it finds a way to preserve a city. The same root describes skilled craft, so the verse presents wisdom as the capacity to shape an outcome, even when the person carrying it has little standing.

ALSO GROWS

ḥokhmāh: Wisdom, including practical skill.

חָכְמָה

The verse repeats this word’s root for the means by which the city is delivered, making wisdom an effective skill rather than an abstract quality.

ḥakhāmîm: Wise or skilled people.

חֲכָמִים

The root names a person’s capacity, not their rank; this wise man can preserve a city while remaining poor and unremembered.

A community can be preserved by wisdom carried by someone whose status gives them little recognition.

Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba, son of Bichri, and threw it to Joab. And he blew a trumpet, and they scattered from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab turned back to Jerusalem, to the king.
2 Samuel 20:22 · SDVA woman’s wisdom brings a city’s siege to an end, showing discernment preserving a community where force alone has not settled the crisis.
For by steering you make your war, and in a multitude of counselors there is deliverance.
Proverbs 24:6 · SDVSafety depends on counsel that helps a community navigate danger, not only on visible strength.
And now I urge you to take heart, for not one living soul among you will be thrown away, only the ship.
Acts 27:22 · SDVIn the midst of a storm, Paul’s words preserve the people aboard even as the ship is lost.
Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.
Genesis 40:23 · SDV

The Hebrew for “remember” in both verses comes from ⁨זכר⁩ (z-k-r), a root that also carries the sense of mentioning someone. Joseph is left unmentioned after helping another person, just as the poor wise man saves a city without being kept in its memory.
