This verse in the King James

King James wording
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

Life reaches you while you are still dead, and arrives as life shared with Christ.

Even in your present deadness from what has gone wrong, God makes you alive together with Christ. The verse places this life before your repair: you are made alive while still dead in trespasses. This favor is the ground of your deliverance, not a reward for reviving yourself.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

You have to become spiritually alive before God’s favor can reach you.

συνεζωοποίησεν

synezōopoiēsen

GROWS FROM

ζάω

zaō

to live, to be alive

“quickened us together” in this verse is synezōopoiēsen. The Greek verb joins ⁨συν⁩ (syn, together) to ⁨ζωοποιέω⁩ (zōopoieō, make alive): the act itself is “make alive together.” English preserves the togetherness in a separate phrase, while Greek binds it into the verb, making shared life with Christ the shape of the enlivening.

ALSO GROWS

zōē: life

ζωή

This is the life named inside the verb: what is given is life itself.

zōopoieō: make alive, give life

ζωοποιέω

The same life-root describes enlivening as something given, not self-generated.

syzāō: live together, live with

συζάω

Its ⁨συν⁩ (syn, together) prefix makes companionship part of the word’s sense, echoing the shared life named here.

χάρις

charis

GROWS FROM

χαρ-

char-

favor, gracious regard

The parenthetical clause names what reaches you as favor. This word family includes freely granting and giving thanks, placing the life you receive in the register of gift rather than earned exchange.

ALSO GROWS

charizomai: grant freely, show favor

χαρίζομαι

This branch makes the gift-like character of the favor explicit.

eucharisteō: give thanks

εὐχαριστέω

The same word family links favor with gratitude, illuminating life as received rather than achieved.

Life reaches what is dead as God’s action, before the dead can make itself alive.

Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones, Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live.
Ezekiel 37:5 · SDVLife reaches what has no power to revive itself, and the bones live through what God brings to them.
Truly, truly, I say to you, The hour is coming, and now it is, when the dead will hear and respond to the voice of the Son of God, and those who respond will live.
John 5:25 · SDVThe dead hear the voice now, and life follows as something received.
As it is written, I have set you as a father of many nations, before God, on whom he leaned his full weight, who makes the dead alive and calls the things that are not as though they were.
Romans 4:17 · SDVGod is named as the one who gives life to the dead and speaks what is not into being.
And you, being dead in your stumbles and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, he made you alive together with him, having released us from all our stumbles.
Colossians 2:13 · SDV

Colossians uses the same rare verb, ⁨συνεζωοποίησεν⁩ (synezōopoiēsen, made alive together). It places that shared life beside the release of trespasses, showing release as part of the movement from deadness into life.
