This verse in the King James

King James wording
And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:

A people’s flourishing can sound like a threat to a voice measuring their life against its own power.

A voice guarding its place sees another people growing and calls that growth a danger. “More and mightier than we” reveals how comparison turns their flourishing into a contest. The verse speaks to the moment another’s strength is mistaken for your loss.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It unsettles the belief that another people’s growth is itself an injury to you; the words “than we” show comparison shaping the threat.

עָצוּם

ʿāṣûm

GROWS FROM

ע־צ־ם

ʿ-ṣ-m

To grow strong or become numerous.

“bone-stronger” in this verse is ʿāṣûm. English separates being mighty from being many, but this root carries both strength and increase. Its word-family also includes “bone,” connecting might with the substantial frame that holds a body together.

ALSO GROWS

ʿetsem: Bone; also substance or self

עֶצֶם

This branch connects strength with what gives a body its structure and substance.

vayyaʿatsmu: They grew mighty or numerous

וַיַּעַצְמוּ

In Exodus 1:7, this same root describes Israel’s increase, the flourishing Pharaoh now frames as a threat.

The same increase can be named as promise or threat depending on whether it is seen as shared flourishing or rival power.

And Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him.
Genesis 18:18 · SDVThe same word for “mighty” describes a nation whose increase is bound to blessing.
And the children of Israel bore fruit and swarmed and multiplied and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.
Exodus 1:7 · SDVThe growth called a threat in verse 9 is first described here as fruitfulness, multiplication, and might.
And the word of God grew, and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly, and a great crowd of the priests heard and responded by leaning their weight.
Acts 6:7 · SDVIncrease appears again as a spreading life that grows in number.
And Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him.
Genesis 18:18 · SDV

The same Hebrew word, ⁨עָצוּם⁩ (ʿāṣûm), describes Abraham’s promised nation as “mighty” and Israel’s strength in Pharaoh’s speech. The root stays the same; the gaze changes what that increase means.
