This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

Moses is not called bad; the davar, the whole matter, is what is judged unsound.

A way of carrying responsibility can look faithful and still become unsound when every decision rests on one person. The judgment falls on the matter itself, not on Moses’ worth. What is not good can be named and reshaped so the work can be shared.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that taking every decision on yourself is automatically the faithful way to serve does not hold here.

דָּבָר

davar

GROWS FROM

ד־ב־ר

d-b-r

To speak; as a noun, a word, matter, or thing.

The Hebrew ⁨דָּבָר⁩ (davar, “matter” or “word”) can name both a thing and what is spoken. So the “thing” under judgment is a whole matter that can be brought into speech and seen clearly.

ALSO GROWS

dibbēr: He spoke; to speak.

דִּבֵּר

This verb from the same root echoes inside “thing”: the matter being judged is something that can be spoken aloud.

devarim: Words or matters.

דְּבָרִים

Its plural keeps both senses together, showing how a “thing” can also be a subject for speech and shared attention.

A work entrusted to many becomes more bearable when its weight is shared.

"I cannot carry all this people alone, for it is too heavy for me."
Numbers 11:14 · SDVThe burden becomes too heavy for one person, making shared responsibility necessary.
Two are better than one, because they have good wages for their toil.
Ecclesiastes 4:9 · SDVShared labor can bring a better result than one person working alone.
And he called the twelve to himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over the unclean breaths.
Mark 6:7 · SDVThe work goes forward through people sent together rather than one person carrying it alone.
Moreover, you shall look out from all the people for men of strength, who stand in awe of God, men of truth, who hate plunder; and set such over them as rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
Exodus 18:21 · SDV

The judgment that the matter is “not good” opens into a structure where responsibility is distributed among trustworthy people. The work continues, but its weight is carried through a design many can hold.
