THE KEY
Moses is not called bad; the davar, the whole matter, is what is judged unsound.
THE MEANING
A way of carrying responsibility can look faithful and still become unsound when every decision rests on one person. The judgment falls on the matter itself, not on Moses’ worth. What is not good can be named and reshaped so the work can be shared.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that taking every decision on yourself is automatically the faithful way to serve does not hold here.
THE ROOT
דָּבָר
davar
GROWS FROM
ד־ב־ר
d-b-r
To speak; as a noun, a word, matter, or thing.
The Hebrew דָּבָר (davar, “matter” or “word”) can name both a thing and what is spoken. So the “thing” under judgment is a whole matter that can be brought into speech and seen clearly.
ALSO GROWS
dibbēr: He spoke; to speak.
דִּבֵּר
This verb from the same root echoes inside “thing”: the matter being judged is something that can be spoken aloud.
devarim: Words or matters.
דְּבָרִים
Its plural keeps both senses together, showing how a “thing” can also be a subject for speech and shared attention.
THE PATTERN
A work entrusted to many becomes more bearable when its weight is shared.
I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;THE THREAD
Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:The judgment that the matter is “not good” opens into a structure where responsibility is distributed among trustworthy people. The work continues, but its weight is carried through a design many can hold.
