This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the glory of the LORD abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud.

The LORD’s weight settles beneath the cloud, and the call comes from inside it.

The presence is already resting on the mountain, even while the cloud keeps it covered. On the seventh day, a call comes from within that same obscurity. Hiddenness here is not the opposite of presence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A covered presence is an absent presence.

כְּבוֹד

kevod

GROWS FROM

כבד

To be heavy or weighty.

The word translated “glory” carries the concrete sense of weight and substance. This same root gives the verb “honor,” treating someone as weighty, so the verse presents the LORD’s presence as settling on the mountain with real weight.

ALSO GROWS

kaved: Heavy; weighty.

כָּבֵד

The root’s physical weight gives depth to the image of the LORD’s presence resting on Sinai.

kibbed: To honor; treat as weighty.

כִּבֵּד

The same seed connects the LORD’s weight with the honor due to what carries that weight.

וַיִּשְׁכֹּן

vayishkon

GROWS FROM

שכן

To settle down or dwell.

The verb translated “abode” carries the sense of settling and dwelling. The same root forms words for a dwelling place and a neighbor, linking settled presence with both a place and nearness.

ALSO GROWS

mishkan: Dwelling place; tabernacle.

מִשְׁכָּן

The sanctuary’s name carries the same root, linking the presence that settles on Sinai with a dwelling place.

shakhen: Neighbor; one who dwells nearby.

שָׁכֵן

This branch links dwelling with nearness, opening the image of presence beyond the mountain.

A covering can hold the presence and the voice together until the call emerges.

And the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the weight of the LORD filled the dwelling.
Exodus 40:34 · SDVThe cloud covers the dwelling place as the LORD’s weight fills it.
And a cloud came and shaded them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, hear and respond to him.
Mark 9:7 · SDVA voice comes from within the cloud that overshadows those present.
And let them make me a set-apart place, that I may pitch my tent among them.
Exodus 25:8 · SDV

The verb translated “abode” is ⁨שָׁכַן⁩ (shakan, to settle or dwell), the same root behind ⁨מִשְׁכָּן⁩ (mishkan, dwelling place). Here the weight settles on Sinai; Exodus 25:8 carries that same root into dwelling among the people.
