This verse in the King James

King James wording
And thou shalt make staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold.

The gold does not replace the wood: what carries the sacred stays grounded beneath its precious covering.

What carries sacred weight can remain grounded in ordinary material while receiving a precious covering. The covering does not replace the bearer.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that what is valuable must erase or replace what is ordinary beneath it.

וְצִפִּיתָ

ve-tsippita

GROWS FROM

צפה

To overlay or spread a layer across a surface.

“sheathe” in this verse is ve-tsippita. The verb describes gold laid over wood that remains the poles’ bearing structure. The covering reaches even the means of carrying, joining the precious surface to the grounded frame beneath it.

ALSO GROWS

tsippah: Overlaid; plated

צִפָּה

This verbal form shows the same action of laying a covering across a surface.

tsippuy: Coating; overlay

צִפּוּי

This noun names the applied layer itself, keeping the underlying material distinct from what covers it.

The precious can cover or dwell within a humble bearer without making that bearer cease to be what it is.

And you sheathe it in clean gold, within and without you sheathe it, and make upon it a crown of gold round about.
Exodus 25:11 · SDVThe ark’s wood remains beneath its gold covering, inside and out.
But we hold this treasure in clay vessels, so that the overflow of strength may be of God and not from us.
2 Corinthians 4:7 · SDVTreasure rests within earthen vessels, while the vessels remain earthen.
And you sheathe it in clean gold, within and without you sheathe it, and make upon it a crown of gold round about.
Exodus 25:11 · SDV

The same Hebrew root for “overlay” describes the ark’s covering and the covering of its carrying poles. The detail extends the gold surface to the very pieces that bear and move the ark.
