Selah Decoded Version The Selah Decoded Version renders what the Hebrew and Greek words meant to the people who first heard them.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much.

Hebrew uses the same word ⁨מְלָאכָה⁩ (melakhah, work) for the supplied “stuff” and the work itself: provision and purpose share a word, and still something remains.

Your life can hold both realities at once: the work has what it needs, and something remains beyond it. Here, sufficiency is measured against the work itself; excess is what remains after that need is met.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that provision counts as sufficient only when it is used up completely. This verse holds “enough” and “more than enough” together.

וְהוֹתֵר

ve-hoter

GROWS FROM

י־ת־ר

y-t-r

Remain, be left over; by extension, exceed what is needed.

“there was more left over” in this verse is ve-hoter. The phrase rendered “and too much” names what remains after the work is fully supplied. The same root connects a remainder with abundance, so the excess here is not detached from the task: it is what is left once the task has what it needs.

ALSO GROWS

yeter: Remainder, surplus

יֶתֶר

This branch makes the “too much” concrete: something is left after the need is met.

yitron: Gain, advantage

יִתְרוֹן

A remainder can be a gain, showing that what exceeds immediate need need not be meaningless excess.

hotir: Leave over; cause to remain

הוֹתִיר

This causative form emphasizes producing or preserving a surplus, as in the verse’s remaining supply.

When a purpose is fully supplied, provision can still exceed it and leave something over.

You lay out a table before my face, in full view of those who press me. You make my head rich with oil; my cup is soaked full.
Psalm 23:5 · SDVThe overflowing cup pictures provision that goes beyond what is needed to fill it.
So they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the broken pieces of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above for those who had eaten.
John 6:13 · SDVThe meal is complete, and the remaining fragments still fill twelve baskets, making the surplus visible.
And God is able to make all favor overflow toward you, so that you, always holding all you need in everything, may overflow into every good work.
2 Corinthians 9:8 · SDVThe verse places sufficiency alongside abundance, just as enough for the work coexists with what remains.
The LORD shall make you overflow with good, in the fruit of your womb, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers to give you.
Deuteronomy 28:11 · SDV

The verb rendered “make thee plenteous” is ⁨וְהוֹתִרְךָ⁩ (ve-hotirkha, cause you to have surplus), from the same ⁨י־ת־ר⁩ (y-t-r, remain or leave over) root as “too much” in Exodus. The root carries the movement from what remains after a need is met to abundance as surplus, making the excess here a concrete remainder rather than a vague idea of “more.”
