This verse in the King James

King James wording
The hangings of the court, his pillars, and his sockets, and the hanging for the court gate, his cords, and his pins, and all the vessels of the service of the tabernacle, for the tent of the congregation,

The dwelling is not only the tent: every support, cord, peg, boundary, and tool belongs to its service.

A place of encounter is held together by its supports, boundaries, fastenings, and tools; the tent depends on the whole arrangement. The verse joins the dwelling to its service, showing that the space of meeting includes the structures and instruments that sustain its use.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that only the central tent matters dissolves here: the verse names its supports and working tools as part of the dwelling’s service.

עֲבֹדָה

ʿavodah

GROWS FROM

עבד

To work or serve.

Service and the work of serving grow from the same root as the servant. The vessels here are not merely objects in a sacred space; they belong to an active pattern of service.

ALSO GROWS

ʿāvad: To work; to serve.

עָבַד

The verb names the activity contained in the service for which these vessels are gathered.

ʿeved: Servant.

עֶבֶד

The person who serves and the work of service share the same root, joining the tools to the activity they enable.

מִשְׁכָּן

mishkan

GROWS FROM

שכן

To dwell or settle.

Mishkan grows from the verb for dwelling, so the word carries the idea of a place made for dwelling, not just a structure. Its supports, cords, pegs, and vessels belong to the complete arrangement of that dwelling.

ALSO GROWS

shākan: To dwell; to settle.

שָׁכַן

The verb names the act that the tabernacle’s structure makes room for.

shōkhen: One who dwells.

שֹׁכֵן

The same root links the dwelling place with the one who resides there, giving the inventory its purpose.

A dwelling for encounter is made ready through the coordinated whole of its supports, boundaries, fastenings, and working parts.

And he raised up the enclosure all around the dwelling and the altar, and set the screen at the gate of the enclosure. So Moses finished the work.
Exodus 40:33 · SDVThe courtyard, altar, and gate hanging complete the arrangement around the dwelling.
In whom the whole building, joined at the joints, grows into a set-apart temple in the Lord.
Ephesians 2:21 · SDVThe building becomes a dwelling as its parts are framed together.
But much more those limbs of the body that seem to be weaker are needed.
1 Corinthians 12:22 · SDVThe body’s seemingly weaker members still belong to the necessary whole.
And they came, every one whose heart lifted him, and every one whom his breath made free-hearted, and they brought the LORD's lifted offering for the work of the tent of meeting, and for all its serving, and for the set-apart garments.
Exodus 35:21 · SDV

Both verses use ⁨עֲבֹדָה⁩ (ʿavodah, service or work), from ⁨עבד⁩ (ʿavad, to serve or work). Exodus 35:21 connects the dwelling’s work and its service, opening this inventory as the material side of the same work.
