This verse in the King James

King James wording
And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn:

The constricting power is told that the one it grips is already named as God’s firstborn.

This verse names the reader as belonging to God: son, firstborn. Firstborn carries a claim of belonging and inheritance that a ruler cannot grant or take away. The name Israel also holds struggle and belonging together.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Being held by a power does not make you that power’s property.

בְּכֹרִי

bekhori

GROWS FROM

בכר

to be firstborn; the first to open the womb

The root also appears in words for birthright and first fruits, joining firstborn identity with inheritance and the first yield. Here, “my firstborn” names Israel as belonging to God, beyond Pharaoh’s claim.

ALSO GROWS

bekhorah: the right or inheritance of the firstborn

בְּכוֹרָה

It shows that firstborn names a claim of inheritance as well as birth order.

bikkurim: the first produce of the harvest

בִּכּוּרִים

It extends the root’s sense of the first yield belonging in a special way.

בֵּן

ben

GROWS FROM

בנה

to build

The Hebrew word for son is linked with the root for building: a son carries forward the building of a family. “My son” therefore holds both belonging and continuation inside one word.

ALSO GROWS

banah: to build

בָּנָה

It makes the connection between sonship and the continuation of a house visible.

mivneh: a structure or building

מִבְנֶה

It shows another branch of the building root, illuminating sonship as part of what is being built forward.

Firstborn language marks belonging and inheritance that stand above a ruler’s claim.

Set apart to me every firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, of humankind and of beast; it is mine.
Exodus 13:2 · SDVThe firstborn are named as belonging to God, making the claim explicit.
I will also set him as firstborn, above the kings of the earth.
Psalm 89:27 · SDVFirstborn status carries precedence above earthly kings.
For whom he knew beforehand, he also marked out beforehand to be shaped together into the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Romans 8:29 · SDVThe firstborn is placed within a family of many, extending the language of belonging beyond one person.
Set apart to me every firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, of humankind and of beast; it is mine.
Exodus 13:2 · SDV

“Firstborn” here and in the connected verse comes from ⁨בכר⁩ (b-k-r, to be firstborn). The later verse makes the claim already present in Exodus 4:22 unmistakable: the firstborn belongs to God.
